Missing Titanic submarine

Twinklesgolden · 19/06/2023 17:50

How horrifying that a submarine carrying 5 people has gone missing. Apparently there’s only 96 hours of air on the submarine when it sets off.

The people on board must be terrified!

I believe there is a women on the ship who had been on the last submersible trip which lead to some confusion.

Ahh is she just on the ship rather than the submersible? I hope they find them all safe and well.

Before screaming "conspiracy theories" you might want to get hold of any manual for aspiring Public Relations goons...

Which doesn't make this drama any less real. And newsworthy, if nothing else because you don't get many tourists diving nearly 4 km deep to visit other people's graveyard.

Thanks! I'm lucky enough to have a job which is interesting and which I mostly enjoy.

@FriedEggChocolate, that was a clever animation but kept making my stomach drop into my feet every time it got deeper. Awful. The thought of being deep under the sea is terrifying to me, as is the thought of being in space. Happy to keep my feet on solid ground.

Absolutely

Deep Space and Deep Sea terrifies Me, just the mere thought.

Tantaijin · 20/06/2023 15:05

Ahh thank you, I’d gotten mixed up with some earlier news reports I think.

Badabingbadaboomm · 20/06/2023 15:15

I honestly keep checking the updates every half hour. I saw a thread on what the conditions will be like now in the submersible. Such a horrific thing to be happening.

Its gut wrenching to think of the outcomes of this. They may have been killed already by being crushed, that they are slowly waiting to die if they cannot be found or that we actually just may never know what happened.

Its probably one of the first times I’ve ever been truly conscious of the fact that people are experiencing something tragic right as it’s on the news and those people are in there as I type this.

I'm no fan of the billionaires but I shiver at the thought of any fellow human in this terrifying situation.

Yes, me too.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 20/06/2023 15:18

I know, I'm the same
Its very haunting knowing they could still be alive just waiting for death. I have two hopes1) that they are found alive and well ASAP or 2) that they had a very quick end and didn't even know what was happening

SirVixofVixHall · 20/06/2023 15:32

I feel very sorry for the families of the missing. There is a woman out there waiting for news of both her husband and teenage son. Horrific.

Just thinking about this makes me need to take deep breaths. I hope they are oblivious, it feels like the plot to a bad film.

It reminds me of the awful HMS Thetis disaster at the start of WW11, when a RN sub went down off the coast near Liverpool because something hadn't been done up properly.

There was a heartbreaking radio play about it a few years ago.

Figgygal · 20/06/2023 15:49

It seems very hopeless doesn't it
If at the bottom of the ocean there's basically no chance of rescue theyre 11000 feet deeper than the previously recorded successful undersea rescue. They're sitting in the dark across a huge debris field.
If on the surface then they're trapped inside and need to be found before oxygen runs out. They have no idea where they could be.

Feel for all involved. It's truly awful.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 20/06/2023 15:51

It does seem like it's hopeless unfortunately :(

Florissante · 20/06/2023 16:00

It is an awful situation for all concerned. I feel sorry for them and their families.

Starsandrain · 20/06/2023 16:14

So if it’s at the bottom of the sea and no one can get to it does that mean it will stay there forever? Or will it float back up at some point? It’s such a horrible thing to happen. Those poor people.

Neverinamonthofsundays · 20/06/2023 16:15

It does not bear thinking about. It really does not.

waterlego · 20/06/2023 16:16

Someone upthread was speculating that the occupants of the vessel could succumb to hypothermia but I’ve just read something else (a quoted expert on a news site) suggesting that it might in fact be very hot inside the submersible. Science isn’t my field so I don’t know which scenario is more likely but neither sounds good.

The BBC recently put up some details of the submersable which included:

"The walls of the sub are heated as conditions can become extremely cold at such depths."

So that suggests to me that if the heating fails for some reason they could be in trouble quite quickly

Exloony · 20/06/2023 16:21

I'm just wondering if we know if any of the crew took mobile phones with them? If they are alive and have surfaced in the Atlantic, wouldn't they be able to contact someone?

Neverinamonthofsundays · 20/06/2023 16:25

A mobile phone would not work inside a submarine.

Can't imagine they'd have cell coverage where they are, so only if they have a satellite phone and a satellite phone can catch a signal through the walls of the vessel, which seems unlikely.

Lots of places are grave sites but people visit.

I went to Pompeii and Herculaneum last year. They are places where thousands of people died, and yet they are also tourist attractions.

I've visited Ground Zero. I've also visited war cemeteries.

Personally, I think it's completely foolhardy to travel to the Titanic site due to its location, but I don't think condemning people for visiting sites where people lost their lives is a sound argument.

I've always felt uneasy about people visiting pompei

confusedlots · 20/06/2023 16:36

The thought that they may have resurfaced and could potentially be rescued but may not be found in time is very harrowing. But I have a feeling we'll never find out what happened

As others have said it's unlikely a phone would work - but he Guardian reported this morning:

"The Titan has an array of signals, lighting, reflectors and other equipment it can use once on the surface to attract attention."

But that seems at odds to what others have been saying that even if it gets to the surface it's a needle in a haystack?

I also just read that the weights are designed to dissolve eventually if they are down too long and not released - so it may yet make it to the surface if it hasn't already

darkmodeon · 20/06/2023 16:38

Do they have cyanide?

It was me and I wasn't speculating. It's the opinion of expert on oceanic exploration David Gallo who spoke to CNN. He's the senior advisor for Strategic Initiatives who own the salvage rights to the Titanic site. He said that "if the sub is still at the bottom, hypothermia will be an issue" as the temperature is only just above freezing.
