How old is 'too old' for a child to be naked at a splash park?

Sitting here with the 4yo niece charge at a splash park... 6/7 year old girl running round starkers! I'm a bit shocked tbh.

Now I have been "caught short" before, but she's just been sent in the water in her knickers, because she can always just go commando on the way home.

I think anything around 3+ is too old tbh.

We have several miles of sandy beach where I live, at one extreme end there are nudists, ususally male, it is an area well away from the tourist areas and no one really walks down there much, EXCEPT for one guy who visits from Milton Keynes and complains EVERY year about this particular area. He walks down there then complains about it in the local rag, it has become a bit of a local joke.
Yes, you can walk where you like but if it offends you that much I'm sure he could avoid this small area. It doesn't lead anywhere except out to cliff base and there cliffs, erosion areas backing on to it. Families don't go there as there is nothing to do or see.

I thing kids should go naked in sprinklers if they want. In much of Europe it is completely normal. I have seen kids in Holland on the beach aged 9 or 10, completely unembarrassed- so lovely

Such a weird comment.

Obviously fine for parents though! I mean if they want to be naked then so be it. Not for me but each to her own. But I would not allow my kids to be included in a ‘hobby’ that was just being naked around strangers. Don’t think it sends the right message myself.

Of course!

I agree ….. very weird comment!

Whats more lovely than seeing happy playing children, being naked doesn’t make it more lovely? Does it?

@BlinkeredBay that comment didn't sit right with me. Made me feel very uneasy.

loislovesstewie · 20/06/2023 11:46

Sorry, but I think the naked rambler has something wrong with him. He can legally strip off in certain places with like minded people, why does he want to wander around naked all the time? Must be bloody cold!

KnittedCardi · 20/06/2023 11:47

Illegal in Scotland, not in England.

Do you know where I live? Because if you do that’s bloody weird as well!

You posted a story which was relevant to Scotland, nudity being illegal there. I posted a story relevant to England, where nudity is not illegal. Just putting forward different opinions exist in different countries, which we were discussing, as to the difference between Brits and Europeans. Both stories are therefore valid, and irrelevant to where anyone actually lives.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 20/06/2023 11:53

@TimeToMoveIt , I dare say you mean ‘naive’. Well, a lot of pps strike me as very prudish.

People often remark on how much more relaxed about nudity people are in other countries - Germany in particular comes to mind - and I’m sure they have just as many paedophiles there as we do. Only perhaps they don’t imagine them around every corner, and hanging around at every splash park with their phones at the ready.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 20/06/2023 11:54

I'm torn on this one. I think little kids should be allowed to run around naked without anyone batting an eyelid, but sadly, I don't think that's possible.

I don't really understand the idea that it's OK when they're 3 but not when they're 6. If they need to be covered up to protect their privacy etc, then that applies at all ages, surely? Why would it be OK for a 3yo to be exposed but not a 6yo? I genuinely don't get the difference.

Do we know where OP is based?

Anyway the thread is not about the legality of adult nudity, it’s about parents job to protect their children.

Maybe start a thread on the subject matter you want?

Can I ask again how you would feel if someone took a photo of your naked child?

I agree they “should” but as you say they can’t.

labamba007 · 20/06/2023 12:02

I do wonder why they don't worry about paedophiles in other European counties where children naked is completely the norm? In the Uk we seem to be extremely concerned. It's an odd one!

Flickersy · 20/06/2023 12:28

BlinkeredBay · 20/06/2023 11:03

Exactly wasn’t the naked rambler arrested repeatedly for being naked?

The naked rambler was arrested because he kept breaching court orders (often within seconds of leaving prison). He wasn't arrested and punished just because he was naked.

Nudity is not illegal in and of itself in England. You can sunbathe naked in the park if you like. You don't need to be on a nudist beach to go nude. As long as you're not setting out to alarm or distress other people you'll be fine.

Realistically the odds of anything bad happening to a child because they're naked on a beach / at a park and a paedophile sees them are infinitesimally small. They're more in danger of getting into trouble in the water or slipping and knocking their head.

wutheringkites · 20/06/2023 12:44

@Flickersy

I don't think posters think there's necessarily a higher physical threat to naked children but the main risk is them being photographed or filmed and these being shared online. In most instances I'd assume that the parents have no idea that this has happened.

loislovesstewie · 20/06/2023 12:45

Well, I'm going to say it again. I worked as a housing officer for a local authority, I attended MAPPA meetings for a long time. Due to this I knew where the paedophiles/ sex offenders were. They are everywhere, there are more than you might think, they don't walk around with a sign on them telling you. They groom parents so they can access your child and will like nothing more than having a photo of your sweet child, preferably naked. Before I attended those meetings, I probably underestimated how many paedophiles were around, I've been shocked by what I heard and how many children have been abused by a single person. And the pathetic lies and excuses given by the perpetrator.
And do you know what? They never change, they carry on wanting to have sex with children or have photos of them. So, keep your kids covered up so that photos of your lovely child aren't circulated by them.

WinterDeWinter · 20/06/2023 12:51

Mummaneedsabreak · 20/06/2023 11:33

Such a weird comment.

Why? You must know that she meant that it’s lovely to see kids without the self consciousness or shame about their bodies that tends to come / be imposed later?
To me the weirdness is in this obsession with the dangers of children’s nakedness.
have none of you heard of the idea of projection? or denial? Kids are infinitely more likely to be abused in a family setting.
