Tiny flies everywhere

Is anyone else having problems with tiny flies? They're about 3mm long and keep invading my flat. I'm using a trap of apple cider vinegar mixed with washing up liquid but not sure what else to do?

They're not fruit flies. They hang around windows and seem to like damp places as I found two in the sink. They are driving me mad.

Have you got pot plants? You sometimes get little flies that live in the top layer of damp soil.

I've got one in my bedroom but they don't seem very interested in it! They mainly hang around my lounge and like the remains of the dog food which I now quickly remove.

Are you sure they're not fruit flies? I had a problem with tiny flies all around my house. I couldn't find where they were coming from until I pulled back one of my shelving units and found an old rotting onion in a bag that had fallen behind it. It was covered in the flies. Never had a problem with them after that. I didn't originally think they were fruit flies as they were on the windows and flying around the lights.

They sound like gnats. Yes, houseplants. Water from the bottom so the soil doesn't get wet. They also come from drains (drain flies or gnats) so I tip a mix of hot water, vinegar etc down the sink holes.

They could be drain flies coming up through the sink. We went away years ago only to come back to loads of the little buggers. Took me a while to get rid of them (with vinegar and boiling water) but they did go eventually and never came back. I'd never even heard of them before that happened.

Thanks everyone. I don't think they're fruit flies as they don't seem interested in fruit plus I've had fruit flies before and these look different. I think they might be drain flies. I will try hot water and vinegar.

Get one of those battery powered tennis racquets, and swat the little bastards.

I've got it down to a fine art now.

Get yourself a Drosera (sun dew) plant, will clear them really quickly, and you have the fun of knowling they are feeding the plant!

Fungus gnats live in pots of compost, and drain flies live in your drains - for those you can put some bleach down the plughole and put the plug in, leave it overnight.
