Is anyone else watching this? I've watched 3 episodes so far and I'm in disbelief. Not sure whose the psycho, Natalia or the Bennetts. 🤔

Keep watching, it’s he psycho becomes clear.

SnobblyBobbly · 19/06/2023 08:42

Where are you watching it from? I really want to watch it but couldn't find where it was available in the UK.

I'm so intrigued by the weirdness!

I find all of them creepy and weird. The dad is clearly a nutter but Natalia gives me the fucking creeps!!

Neverinamonthofsundays · 19/06/2023 14:58

They are all disturbing and disturbed people. What a weird situation.

lilyboleyn · 19/06/2023 18:34

She’s clearly physically developed since the ‘5 year old’ photos but she looks much older than 16 to me now.

Gingerkittykat · 19/06/2023 21:11

In the earliest photos of her in the USA, a couple of years before she went to the Barnett's, she was missing her two front teeth so was obviously still a child but older than 6.

Her disturbing behaviour could easily be caused by being an abused child who was shifted between families and then physically and emotionally abused by her adoptive parents. Her sexual acting out in hospital and other places could be a result of sexual abuse.

What is most disturbing is the final episode where Michael shares videos of her being made to stand against the wall for hours on end while Kristine questioned her about her past. Both Michael and his older son also allege serious physical assaults where he just sat back and let it happen and claims it was because he was abused himself. I have no idea why the parents have not been charged with abuse for the behaviour inside the home before they dumped her.

I do believe Natalia was older than 6 when she was moved into the Barnett household but definitely not in her 20s.

I hope she has a good future and gets the support she needs.

Neverinamonthofsundays · 19/06/2023 21:14

They found her birth mother and did a dna test. There is an interview with her and Dr Phil on youtube if anyone wants to watch it. Changed my view somewhat.

maranella · 20/06/2023 11:14

I watched this yesterday and had so many questions by the end, that weren't answered or really addressed. Not least, given Natalia's birth date of 4th September 2003, she WAS actually six when the Barnetts adopted her in April 2010. So did she have pubic hair at age six, or is that just a lie that the Barnetts told? Why did she look so old, if she was only six? How come she spoke such good, unaccented English, if she'd only been in the US for a year at that point and had spent the first five years of her life in Ukraine? Why didn't she appear to understand Ukrainian? Had she blocked out that language, due to trauma? So many questions!!

The whole story was horrifying, Michael Barnett was seriously creepy and weird and made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up even on TV. The last few seconds too, when he lets his guard drop Shock

I'm going to watch the Dr Phil interview and see what it adds.

Proudofitbabe · 20/06/2023 22:50

We're about halfway through. They're all creepy! The dad is very theatrical.

Our best guess so far is she was a young teen when she got to the Barnett's, troubled/disturbed/abused (presumably shit past life in care)? 11-13 seems plausible.

I can't see why the parents would go to the effort of adopting a disabled foreign child, and then suddenly make up outrageous lies and neglect her to get rid. I believe she was a bit of a nightmare, and the neighbours backed that up. But I was disturbed by the footage of her living alone, all unkempt, and listening to Michael's tone towards her was uncomfortable IF she actually wasn't an adult. Not looking forward to the last episode mentioned by a PP, being made to stand at the wall. Maybe I'm too easily taken in!

I think she wasn't the 6 year old they thought they were getting, but not that she was already an adult. It's all pretty sad and disturbing.
I'll see if my tune changes by the end!

Freefall212 · 21/06/2023 04:59

The pictures of her from 2009 (and they adopted her in 2010) clearly show a young child whose adult teeth are just starting to come in.

I’ve just binge watched the whole thing today. At first I thought that she was older but even then the abuse and abandonment was horrific. Her behaviour at home and with her neighbours could well be down to the treatment and abuse that she suffered. It was interesting to see how both Christine and Natalia were painted as guilty-sexual ‘deviants’. It was really sad to see her living in the apartment by herself and unable to look after herself. The dad was just so creepy and really over-acting as though he just loved the attention and the way he switched from blaming Natalia to Christine was really telling too. I can’t believe that he got away with it when he had admitted to so much abuse.

Neverinamonthofsundays · 21/06/2023 23:33

You should watch the dr phil interview with Natalia. It is very mind opening. I dont want to say more on here.

How do we watch the Dr Phil interview, is it easy to find?

Neverinamonthofsundays · 24/06/2023 17:51

It is on youtube :)

Heckythump1 · 24/06/2023 18:25

Absolutely mental case....
She was definitely a child though... if she was 22 when the Barnet's had abandoned her, then her bio-Mum would only have been 10 when she was born.
I do wonder if they switched her birth certificate with her elder bio-sister though, to make her appear a few years younger, but her bio-sister is only 4 years older than her, so she'd still have been a child.

ChocolateTVandbaby · 28/12/2023 19:18

I've just seen something about this online and gone to find the documentary

AppleChristsBirthdayMacchiato · 28/12/2023 19:41

There have been multiple cases of Americans adopting young children from foreign orphanages then abandoning them because, surprise surprise, they weren't equipped to handle a deeply traumatised child. There was some semi-famous influencer or YouTuber who got a massive PR kick out of adopting a kid from a Chinese orphanage, made lots of videos about how wonderful she was adopting a foreign orphan, then people noticed that he'd vanished from her videos and she was forced to admit that she's decided to "give him back."

She was obviously a child when they adopted her, she still had most of her baby teeth, and DNA testing showed that she is the age she always claimed to be.

There's nothing in this story that can't be explained by the couple simply not being prepared for the reality of raising a traumatised child, not being able to handle a Ukrainian orphan (social orphan) behaving the way they expect American kids to behave, and making up this stuff to justify abandoning her.

Some of the stuff the couple say are just nutso. The man claimed that Natalia ATE her own menstrual blood to hide the fact she was old enough to be having periods, does that sound like someone with the slightest idea what periods are actually like? The woman violently forced a dry tampon into a small child's vagina so that she'd bleed (from the violence) so that she could use the blood from the wound as proof of menstruation, only a total psycho who gets off on sexually abusing kids would do something like that.

ChocolateTVandbaby · 28/12/2023 22:56

I remember that @AppleChristsBirthdayMacchiato I didn't even follow
them but I remember seeing something about it.

It also makes me think of the film The Orphan from the limited amount I've read.

ChocolateTVandbaby · 28/12/2023 22:57

And that second part sounds unbelievable

PinkCandles · 29/12/2023 11:41

It's been proven she was a child now by dna, dental records and also what the bone doctor said in the series. https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/crime/natalia-grace-speaks-abuse-claims-b2470099.html

I think Natalia's behaviour was down to abuse and attachment disorder due to being shifted around constantly. The Barnetts were so abusive, but unfortunately they said that beating can't be prosecuted after 10 years like it can here. I've got a feeling Christine will get away with dumping Natalia when she was a child due to the judge mistakenly reaging her
