DOCTORS/PHARMACISTS - can my son have calpol before general anaesthetic op tomorrow?

Hello

I can’t get hold of the hospital, no pharmacies are open and 111 can’t advise…

My son has an op tomorrow at about 9am. 10 minute operation under general anaesthetic on a 22 month old.

Can he have calpol beforehand if he’s in pain?

It’s to repair a lip injury which happened yesterday and has caused him lots of pain. He is nil by mouth from midnight but is allowed antibiotics, but I didn’t ask about pain relief :(

No. If he has anything, they won’t do the anaesthetic. The risk of vomiting it back up is too great.

But they’ve already said he can have water and should have antibiotics?

Can anyone help?

Just make sure you tell them when he had the last dose and how much because they'll probably want to give him more for post op pain relief.

Follow the fasting guidelines you've been given and tell the hospital when you gave the paracetamol and what dose so they can avoid giving during the GA and space the next doses appropriately in recovery.

Yes he can have a dose. Just let them know what time you gave at.
