Lovely Places To Visit In The UK

Having spent the last 15 odd years ferrying DC’s around to various activities and sport matches at the weekends, DH and I are finally free and looking forward to making some plans of our own.

I’m looking for ideas for lovely places for day trips. We’re on the beds/bucks borders, so ideally with a couple of hours drive but also anywhere a bit further that we could stay overnight.

As we’re quite close, we’ve done London many times. We like a variety of things, so happy to do scenic, cultural, beach etc

I’m ready with a pen and excited to put our first trip in the diary…

How about walking a bit of the Thames path and staying over in Oxford or Marlowe,Henley way.We have been doing this very slowly over the past couple of years and have seen some lovely towns and beautiful riverside walking.

See a play (any play) at the Minack theatre in Cornwall.

Wiltshire is very under-visited, if you like a good walk on downs, a stone circle or two and good pubs and market towns it’s ace

New forest, a bit trippy but good

Herefordshire/Hay on Wye - SO green - go for the festival maybe

Festival like Wilderness

Knepp in Sussex

That is a good shout actually. Captain Corelli's Mandolin is playing this summer. A fair trip so needs to be a long weekend away or preferably a mid week break.

Also, hop onto the A34 down to Portsmouth and get a ferry to the IOW. Another good long weekend and you really do feel as if you have been away.

Stay in St ives and go to the Minack. I own a holiday let there, I can give you all the recommendations!

Thank you all. Some great ideas that I’d never have thought of. I’m booking some Fridays off work today for some long weekends.

Herefordshire. The tourist information office in Hereford has a map giving a route taking in most of the counties churches, which are incredibly varied. A beautiful route, taking in Golden Valley.

Stamford in Lincolnshire is lovely and not a long drive. Southwold. Bit further away but beautiful.
Further afield..Whitby is bloody gorgeous. York is always worth a visit. Durham is nice too.
Cambridge?
