Did they tell you the baby's weight in kg or in lbs and oz?

Kilos but there’s a conversion chart in the red book so it’s not a problem.

Bananaspliff · 18/06/2023 20:12

Both

AnneLovesGilbert · 18/06/2023 20:12

Also worth adding that the conversion chart in the red book isn’t accurate so I found out weeks later that my baby’s birth weight was different.

Greycheck · 18/06/2023 20:12

Had my babies between 2003-2013 and they were weighed in kgs and then converted it for us to lbs and ozs.

Gloriousgardener11 · 18/06/2023 20:12

Ibs and oz- 26 years ago, I wouldn’t have understood kilos !

847arc · 18/06/2023 20:12

Kilos, and we said we had no bloody clue and made them convert it Grin

Pollywoddles · 18/06/2023 20:14

Both! My husband and the consultant are both from a country that uses metric and I am from and gave birth in a country that still uses imperial for babies weight so the nurse announced in pound and ounces and the consultant quickly converted for my husband.

UpUpUpU · 18/06/2023 20:14

Kilos. I’m a midwife and we always give the weight in kgs

MichelleScarn · 18/06/2023 20:15

Grams, trying to convert 2375 g to pounds was annoying!

CurlewKate · 18/06/2023 20:16

Both. 1995.

I was born 37 years ago and I recently found the piece of paper from the hospital that my details were written on and it gives my weight in kg.

  1. Both.
Cattenberg · 18/06/2023 20:19

They recorded it in kilos and might have told me this figure as well. But they also told me the approximate weight in pounds and that’s the one I’ve always remembered.

Fooshufflewickjbannanapants · 18/06/2023 20:19

Pounds in 1999 kilos there after but always converted for us

PippaPug · 18/06/2023 20:41

2020 for my twins it was Lb and oz

MargotBamborough · 18/06/2023 20:41

So far this thread is confirming my suspicion that babies born in the UK are weighed in kilos and have been for decades, but the first thing most parents do is convert back into pounds and ounces!

This must be a deeply cultural thing.

I bet most people who do this quite happily cook and bake in metric.

OP posts:
Bananaspliff · 18/06/2023 22:28

I suppose it is a cultural thing. I’m 37 and I don’t think anything of buying milk by the pint and petrol by the litre. I weigh my cooking ingredients in grams but people always in stones and pounds. I measure driving distances in miles but will buy carpet by the square metre.

BlackLambAndGreyFalcon · 18/06/2023 22:31

Kilos - and I never converted it to pounds and ounces - I don't know how these work!

ScoobyBooby · 18/06/2023 22:35

All mine have been weighed in KG and subsequent weigh in at the baby clinic or HV are also KG but they convert it into Oz&LB when updating their red books.

DoesItHaveKosovo · 18/06/2023 22:39

Grams, which was fine for me as I go to the gym a lot 😁 & “the weight of a small dumbbell” meant a lot to several friends!

Kilos. Very annoying.

Why annoying? This isn't the 1950s.

Yes to all of this. And we are the same age. It's odd, isn't it?
