Did they tell you the baby's weight in kg or in lbs and oz?

In pounds - 2009. I wouldn't have understood kilos (still don't, which comes in handy when nurse tells me my weight at over 55s check up 😀)

Both (11 yrs ago)

Pounds and ounces 16 years ago. I've got a photo of the scales he was being weighed on in the labour suite showing 7lbs 10oz.

I can't remember whether this was maybe for our benefit though and she had switched the units after recording in kilos.

BlackLambAndGreyFalcon · 19/06/2023 09:09

The only measurements I use imperial for are pints (for milk and beer) and miles, because that's what I'm forced to do in this silly half in half out system we have in this country. I have no frame of reference for pounds and ounces and if someone told me their babies weight in imperial, I wouldn't instinctively know whether they were big or small. A sack of potatoes is 2.5kg and dd was slightly bigger than that (on the small size for a baby as she was born on 25th percentile).

Britinme · 19/06/2023 11:17

I still remember the daft rhymes they advertised when the metric system came in. "A litre of water's a pint and three quarters". "A meter measures three foot three, it's longer than a yard you see". I also know a kilo is 2.2 pounds. But I have to convert from metric to Imperial in my head to actually have a sense of volume, distance or weight.

7lb 2oz 1997

MrsTwiggy · 19/06/2023 14:22

I had my babies in 2021 and 2023 and they told me in lbs and oz!

HiCandles · 19/06/2023 18:38

Pounds and ounces last year, which had been converted from the original metric but I am a GP and far more used to seeing baby weights in metric so I asked for that one!
At work I talk in kilos for babies and I would say that it's only British born parents who want imperial. I have a lot of patients from various parts of Europe and south Asia and they always seem to want metric. Same with milk volumes - British want to tell me ounces of milk, everyone else is happy with millilitres. I am constantly having to convert oz to ml to work out how much per kg the baby is actually having.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 19/06/2023 19:10

Pretty sure it was pounds / ounces as I wouldn't have a clue what the kilo/ Grammies weight was . This was 22 years ago .

Fifthtimelucky · 19/06/2023 19:14

Late 90s. Both times I was told in kilos but was asked whether I wanted it converted into pounds and ounces, which I did.

MuchTooTired · 19/06/2023 19:33

Grams on their bracelets, but they told us their weights in pounds and ounces.

Weirdly, one of the nurses spotted that DD’s birth weight in grams was inaccurate on her bracelet by saying “she’s not a 4lb baby!” She was right, she was a 7lber.

I probably sound stupid with the above, but I was amazed (and still am!) that she was able to convert it in her head, and knew the weight of both DTs by sight.

nildesparandum · 19/06/2023 19:38

My two were born in 1969 and 1972.They were weighed in kilos.
DC1 3530
DC2 3250

I even remember it

gogohmm · 19/06/2023 19:41

Both, scarily 24 years ago

That’s just under the weight of the average Asian elephant, I think you might be slightly misremembering, or you deserve a reward 😅

gogohmm · 19/06/2023 19:43

@MargotBamborough I bake in pounds and ounces but easily convert between the two in my head

greenacrylicpaint · 19/06/2023 19:45

both
babies length wasn't measured which really irritated my forrin inlaws.

Equimum · 19/06/2023 19:57

I was initially told on kilos, but the midwife had the conversion chart to hand and immediately told me in pounds and ounces!

Twokidsanddone · 19/06/2023 20:17

With both my DC (2019 and 2021) we were told both

Thankyou, I forgot to put the decimal point after the first number!.
Both born by EMCS as well.

2chocolateoranges · 20/06/2023 21:08

We were told both lbs and oz and kilos, however my brain only works in lbs and oz so that’s what I remember, babies born early 2000’s

BlockbusterVideoCard · 20/06/2023 21:16

All mine were in lbs and oz only, across several hospitals, 25-30 years ago.

EmmaPaella · 20/06/2023 21:25

I was told in grams eg 4550 or whatever she was. It was 8lb 1 anyway.

Clearly I immediately converted it or maybe they told me that verbally.

I cook in lb and oz by preference. I vaguely now know eg how many kg are in 6oz but I still have to check. I even lived in Europe for a year and just doesn’t sink in.

AdventuresAwait · 20/06/2023 21:28

Both! In 2021.

Weirdly, I always measured my baby formula in oz but measure liquid for cooking in g.
