PayPal used by thief

DS had his phone stolen last night in London, it was snatched while unlocked.

The thief accessed his Uber eats account and sent £300 of food to an address in London.

He's called PayPal and disputed it, they investigated and ten minutes later emailed to say they don't think it was an unauthorised payment.

He's reported to police who gave a crime number but said they won't do anything.

Is there anything else he can do? He's a student and that money means a lot to him.

did he report it stolen before the order was made?

No he couldn't, they made the order within a few minutes of stealing it.

Ah well I can see where they are coming from tbh. There are a lot of chancers out there, it's a shame he's out of pocket.

He's called the bank and reported it as an unauthorised payment too. Maybe they'll be more understanding.

It was one bottle of champagne btw.

He only ever uses Uber Eats for dominos about once every 6 weeks. You'd think they might question it too, especially as it was a random address.

This happened to me, the bank couldn’t do anything as I had PayPal as my preferred payment for Uber and PayPal initially said it was an authorised transaction. I rang PayPal and spoke to someone who was really helpful. The fact that it was delivered to a random address helped and I was refunded. I also messaged Uber eats at the same time to explain and they refunded PayPal back after initially refusing to. It did take a few hours to sort out but got there in the end. Hope your son gets his money back.

Call PayPal. I got scammed and when I reported electronically they said it wasn't unauthorised, but when I called, I got a refund.

Just to update, he called PayPal as advised here and they've refunded him. The bottle of champagne wasn't collected at the address it was sent to and the crime report number helped.

The man at PayPal said they're seeing lots of this - phone stolen and waved in front of face to unlock or snatched when on. Then the thief can access the whole phone. Luckily banking apps etc should be password protected but things like UberEats aren't.
