Does anybody live in an eruv?

How religiously observant/sociable do you have to be to fit in? What is the ratio of J:NJ in yours? Or alternatively, have you moved out of one and if so, why?
Thanks

Specifically, a house has come out for sale on the edge of the eruv. Dh is non observant and would want to freely enter and leave the eruv. However, this would make him really conspicuous and while he is not bothered, I suppose that I am.

If your husband isn't bothered, then you shouldn't be either.

As LaBefana wrote: 'Your husband is not an observant Orthodox or Hasidic Jew. he is not bound by an eruv any more than any non-Jew.'

In a later post you wrote:

I would add that he has Hasidic ancestry so that is why I think it would offend some.

Why do you think that anyone would know he has Hasidic ancestry?

LaBefana · 18/06/2023 20:39

How would he be more 'conspicuous' than a Catholic, Muslim, Buddhist, Sikh, Jane, Ba'hai, Methodist, Quaker, or atheist walking up that street? I'm worried that you are hinting that your alleged husband is 'Jewish looking', which would put a definite certain complexion on this thread that you started.

This is what I think too.

Sigh.

Ibizafun · 18/06/2023 21:50

I get it.. I think it would be fine, just obviously don't expect to be part of that community if you done keep shabbos.

LaBefana · 18/06/2023 21:50

@legrandcolbert

Why do you think that anyone would know he has Hasidic ancestry?

If he leaves the hat at home, he ought to be safe enough, you'd think? Unless the OP has been reading Der Stürmer.

Ibizafun · 18/06/2023 21:53

LaBefana love that

PonyPatter44 · 18/06/2023 21:56

If you could see her him like I do....
She he wouldn't
Look
Jewish
At all!

Apologies to Cabaret I also wonder about the OPs motive with this thread. Am not Jewish, but went to school within an eruv many many years ago and it had NO bearing on how us non-Jews lived our lives.

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 18/06/2023 22:02

I live in an Eruv. There are lots of observant Jews, lots of non observant Jews, and even more people who aren't Jewish in the slightest. I don't think most of my neighbours know what an Eruv even is, despite living in one. Most never notice the very rare occasions where the boundary is not marked by an existing wall or fence as the wires are so high and run from existing telegraph poles.

WaterIris · 18/06/2023 22:03

What an odd thread. How would the neighbours know about your husband's Jewish ancestry? Buy the house, don't buy the house - the orthodox neighbours won't be interested as they'll be getting on with their lives, and the eruv will have no meaning or impact to you.

MillyMollyMango · 18/06/2023 22:06

Do you mean he’s going to carry a bag in and out of the eruv on Shabbat?

WaterIris · 18/06/2023 22:08

I clicked on the thread purely because I wondered if it was the eruv local to me (I'm in Manchester).

legrandcolbert · 18/06/2023 22:11

@WaterIris Yes, there is

butwhyyyyyy · 18/06/2023 22:11

So I assume your husband's name indicates Jewish Hasidic. I think if you are not living or practising Hasidic it will be obvious sooner rather than later by your everyday life and clothings and then whether you will be judged negatively for not observing and thus being excluded from friendly social life in the strictly practising community is a genuine possibility.

Some religious people respect everyone even atheists they can have a cup of tea with them and some people will keep you at an arm's length.

You asked about an eruv in Manchester. I'm confirming there is.

WaterIris · 18/06/2023 22:17

I think we have crossed wires. I know there's an eruv in Manchester because I live close to it. I was explaining that was the reason why I clicked on the thread; I'd wondered if the OP was talking about the eruv near me, or one somewhere else.

Wonder how many hits Wiki has had in the last 3 hours? 😂

Ahh. It's all good anyway.

That's just what I've done. How interesting.... I'm not Jewish, knew something about the restrictions on activities during Shabbat, but had never heard of an eruv. I've learned something today🙂

Let's hope the OP has too

Rockbird · 18/06/2023 22:47

I'm Irish Catholic and even I know what an Eruv is and how it works.

AbsoluteYawns · 18/06/2023 22:52

OP how can someone know your DH has Jewish ancestry?
Also an Eruv is practically invisible you can't see a boundary!
Weird thread to start.

I think we've established it's an anti-Semite being mischievous.

NewHouseNewMe · 18/06/2023 23:16

I do and have done for many years. It is entirely transparent to non and reform Jews, and just part of the rich tapestry of life in London.
Most Jewish people around me are not very religious at all. The more observant can be seen walking to synagogue on Saturday and that’s it.
No-one will notice or care what you do within or outside the boundaries of the eruv. It’s very much a “live and let live” area.

LemonLymanDotCom · 18/06/2023 23:26

There’s an Eruv at the entrance to our housing estate in North London, but most people don’t notice it. Usually it has to be pointed out to be seen as it really is just a thin bit of wire up high above your head. The only time you notice is when an articulated lorry has knocked it down and people are frantically trying to re-erect it pre sundown on a Friday.

The estate is a mix of Jewish & non Jewish residents. No one bats an eye at observance or not, certainly I’ve walked under the Eruv on a Friday evening and none of my Jewish neighbours raised an eyebrow or appeared to be annoyed with me. Why would they? Live and let live.

As another poster said, it’s all part of the rich tapestry of life round our way.
