I like my house and I really like having nature on my doorstep. And I like that I can walk into town within 20mins.

Close to the sea.
At night you can hear a pin drop.
Fabulous starry skies and moonlight due to sensible minimal street lighting in Melbourne suburb, though the first time I drove at night there I was very nervous, as all Poms are first time out.

Reading this thread has made me very dissatisfied. I don’t like my house or where I live at all. Have wanted to move since the day I moved in.
Advantages are great public transport, close to shops, dentist and doctor and library. Beach not far away. However too much traffic and noise, don’t know any neighbours , no sense of community. I crave quiet, peace, green spaces, no near neighbours and a great community. Most of all very little traffic.

blueshoes · 18/06/2023 23:52

City girl here. Love that I live in a green leafy part of London 15 minutes by train to Central London. We are in a bijou section but close to more gritty up-and-coming areas with lots of colour, cheap and fantastic market, restaurants, hairdressers, beauticians. Close to public transport but also easy to drive further out. Lots of schools nearby, cinemas, leisure facilities, supermarkets, IKEA and worldclass concert arena and exhibition centre to drive to and easy to park. Royal park within walking distance. Also close to an airport.

You can probably triangulate my location.

ASGIRC · 18/06/2023 23:59

My neighbourhood is like a little oasis in the big city. Its quite secluded, as there is no through traffic, so only cars about are from neighbours/visitors.

It has cafes, restaurants, a social club, as well as all sorts of shops.

I can walk to work (20 minute walk downhill), and take public transport back home. Loads of transport links to every area of the city and to the suburbs as well.

Have actually made friends with loads of neighbours, by going to the local football club, which functions as a local pub, almost - it is where everyone goes for a drink or a coffee.

Never thought Id like the area so much, as it is social housing in a less afluent area, so my neighbours are basically all lower/working class, which is not really my background. But I love it!

OooPourUsACupLove · 19/06/2023 00:11

The Turkish grocers with huge selection of fresh fruit and veg and fresh bread that are open till 10pm every day.

The front gardens full of flowers.

How so many people ride bikes these days.

The sense that the whole world is passing right through the city.

Walking to work past world famous scenes, and all the stories written about the streets around me.

No one pointing or nudging or gossiping because everyone's too busy doing something to worry about what everyone else is doing

I am a 20 minute walk from the seaffront, which has shops, restaurants, cafés and you can walk past the boats, and the occasional cruise ship coming in to port. I like that I live in a part of Greece that does not have many tourists, so during the summer you don’t have the problems like the islands to. I have a giant balcony, so can sit outside, put a small paddling pool, ride my bike on it, etc. I am visually impaired and just bought this place back in March, so still trying to get used to it. And I like that I am a very short walk away from Jumbo, which is like the Greek equivalent of… Costco maybe.

Catsmere · 19/06/2023 00:16

I like the neighbours in my retirement village and the general friendliness and helping strangers I’ve encountered in this city. I love being within easy reach of multiple amenities - specialty shops, vets, doctors, chain stores, supermarkets - again after a couple of years in a very small country town.

ButterflyCharm · 19/06/2023 00:34

Following are walking distance
Large park 10 mins
Countryside 20 mins
Lovely country pub with decent food 25 minutes
Town 30 mins
Local shops inc a Post Office and Pharmacy 10 mins
Swimming baths 15 mins
Train station 35 minutes

Nice neighbours, very friendly road, very private quite big garden.

Decent major roads 10 minute drive away

Cornishclio · 19/06/2023 00:37

I like being less than 30 minutes from the coast. I like being able to walk out into the countryside from my house. I like being on a bus route to our nearest city and also able to catch a train down to lovely places like St Ives or Looe in less than an hour.

caringcarer · 19/06/2023 01:10

I live in what would probably be described as a large village on the outskirts of a large town and 30 mins from Birmingham except in rush hour then 50 mins. I can walk to a lovely large lake that I can walk around with a cycle path too. It has swans, geese and ducks. It is very peaceful. There is very little crime. There is a hairdresser and a nail bar within a 10 min walk. There is a local cricket club. There is a good bus service into our town. It has an Odean cinema, bowling, the snowdone with a climbing wall, skiing, snowboard and swimming. In town and out of town shopping centres. Lots of children's activities like karate and Crav Magar, football clubs for children and adults too.

DaftyLass · 19/06/2023 03:32

I'm walking distance to work, to the basic shops, and I'm surrounded by nature.
I live in a beautiful waterway, and pay a mid range rent.

MoltenLasagne · 19/06/2023 04:06

We have everything we need right on our doorstep.

In walking distance we've got our nursery, lovely primary schools, doctors, dentist and pharmacy, multiple great parks and a woods. Plus lots of independent bakeries, shops, cafes and two local libraries which still have decent opening hours. So many child friendly community activities available.

I can walk to work in 45 mins or get the bus in 20 mins which comes every 5 mins or so.

In 15 minutes I can be in the city if I drive south or the countryside if I drive north.

The only thing we'd wish for is water - sadly no local rivers or canals and very far from the sea.

CeriB82 · 19/06/2023 06:33

Greenery, lakes, quarries, not far from the beach (5 mile walk), fact i have no next door neighbours, variation in weather, in a tourist area but where i live they don’t realise it ls there as there is only one place to be according to them which is great!
im far enough from those chain takeaway places and restaurants, no uber, just eat and that gimmick. We easily do without and its absolutely not necessary

my house is over 250 yrs old, cosy, historic, lots of love and I could sit in the garden naked if i wanted to ,

Wherestheheatwave · 19/06/2023 07:01

I want to know where you all live!

LaurieFairyCake · 19/06/2023 07:11

I live in Greenwich, London

Hundreds of acres of park and heath leading down to the river.

Free museums and things to do every day.

Amazing public transport - can get a bus to Westminster bridge for £1.75 in 40 minutes or a train to Charing Cross in 18 minutes

I can walk to Canary Wharf through the foot tunnel where there's loads of lovely shops and parks. I can walk to the O2 along the river.

I can take a boat up to town where it feels like I'm on holiday as I pass Canary Wharf, Tower Bridge, the London Eye, Westminster - bog standard commute for me.

I'm pretty sure I live in the best place on the planet 😊

IHeartGeneHunt · 19/06/2023 07:18

There's a green flag award winning park right beside my house, where I can pick blackberries and raspberries. My allotment is two minutes walk on the other side of the park, my neighbours are lovely, it's a very safe area, I can walk to town or the train station in half an hour, there's buses and trams, two supermarkets walkable, a good corner shop, post office and chip shop across the road. I love it.

NeverThatSerious · 19/06/2023 07:18

Oh it’s just so beautiful. Nothing around but trees and fields on three sides and the sea on the fourth. I can hear the waves when the window is open at night, we’re so close. Not so good for vehicles of course, all that damaging salty sea air.
Our only near(ish!) neighbour is a sweetheart.

Scrunchymum · 19/06/2023 07:20

I like how I can walk to the beach in less than 5 mins.
I can drive but rarely need to during the week as the town centre is a 15 min walk away. There’s a lovely big park close by.The doctors/dentist are both walking distance, as is the supermarket if I need to pick up a few bits. My street is very quiet. Looking out of my window now, I can see a church and trees

It’s not the perfect town & it’s not without its issues, but I love being by the sea. It really is wonderful, especially for the kids.

AlyssumandHelianthus · 19/06/2023 07:23

The streets are lined with trees. There is a lovely park backing directly onto our shady garden. I love sitting on a comfy armchair in our conservatory having a coffee. I love that I know people in the area, but it's London so I can also be anonymous. There are four big parks in walking distance and we're on 4 bus routes and near 4 tube lines. It's a great place to live.

longwayoff · 19/06/2023 07:30

5-10 minute walk into city centre, 5-10 minute walk in opposite direction to water meadows, lots of countryside and trees. There is nothing I dislike about where I live. I'm very lucky.

WolfFoxHare · 19/06/2023 07:32

I like our downstairs - there are four separate rooms downstairs (plus utility and toilet) whereas a lot of newish four bed homes these days seem to just have a kitchen-diner and a big sitting room downstairs.

We have a small wood at the end of our close and I like how much birdsong we can hear from there. We’ve spotted deer and foxes and lots of smaller wildlife in there at times. We’re on the doorstep to the countryside too so it’s just a few minutes drive/ten minutes walk and you’re in open fields.

I grew up in a terrace with a back year and craved a lawn - now I love having grass in the back garden. I like the way it smells after it’s rained.

We have a really nice neighbourly community without everyone living in each other’s pockets. No drama. It’s safe to let our DC play out on our close without having to worry about passing traffic.

IrritableVowel · 19/06/2023 07:54

South Dublin suburbs
I can be in city centre in about 30 mins on a weekday, quicker at weekend

Where we live, is really quiet. Lovely neighbours and community. You can literally leave car windows open overnight, and more likely to see a fox in it than for it to be stolen.

Park across the road with great playground and activities/sports all week. Always the buzz of a match or training session.

Houses will never be overlooked due to the layout of the street.

I can walk to everything. Work is less than 15 mins walk. I can go to hairdressers, gym, supermarkets, pubs, pharmacy etc on foot.

Shortish walk, or few mins drive, to big shopping area.

Didn't grow up here but so glad we got this house

Riverlee · 19/06/2023 07:56

Nice countryside close by. Can get to London within an an hour. Can get to the coast with in the hour.
