I like my house and I really like having nature on my doorstep. And I like that I can walk into town within 20mins.

  • Quiet cul-de-sac lane
  • Friendly, helpful, quiet neighbours
  • 15mins walk to the beach
  • I love having birds and wildlife in the garden
  • Many local shops are independent

I feel we have the best of both worlds living where we do. We are in a smallish town on the edge of a city, with plenty of green space nearby (and hills!) The city is 15 mins away by train, but our local town has most of what you'd need shops-wise anyway. My sons have been able to walk to school and there are lots of nice places to walk the dog. The only downside is that we are a very long way from the sea!

I live in a large village (split into 3 areas) and have access to 4 large towns within 20 minutes drive and 2 major cities within 30 minutes. Very close to lots of major motorways for great access, although this can cause us issues when there is an accident on the motorway.

The village itself and has lots of shops, hairdressers, gyms, pubs, restaurants and takeaways. There are 3 good primary schools and an outstanding secondary school within walking distance. Bus services every 30 mins to towns and there are plans to reopen an old train station nearby to give us easy access to the cities. A large nature reserve with lake is close by.

GreyCarpet · 18/06/2023 19:31

I love my house.

I moved from a much envied area to a terraced house in a tree lined street in a much less nice area.

I love the dappled sun through the trees, I love my garden. I especially love that the neighbours don't care one bit about how often I jet wash my drive, mow my lawn or who has come to visit!

Loafbeginsat60 · 18/06/2023 19:47

I can go out and not see a soul if I don't want to. Have access to lochs for swimming, lots of lovely walks and can sunbathe without anyone peering in!! Beach isn't far either.

Shops however, well it's a good 3 hour drive to some decent ones.... I'm good friends with the Amazon man!

fireflyloo · 18/06/2023 19:48

It's leafy and green and has a beach at the bottom of the road. Beside the beach are a few restaurants, wine bar and shops. Only 10 minutes drive into the city.

Copasetic · 18/06/2023 19:56

My house, the immediate area around me, the fact I live in a town and can drive from place to place easily.

midsomermurderess · 18/06/2023 20:01

It’s across the road from a lovey big park and about 25 minutes from a walled garden overlooking the sea. There are lots of walking and cycling paths on what used to be the suburban railway line and you can walk for miles on them with only occasional encounters with roads. It’s quite a tucked-away part of my city but easy to get into the centre.

Viewfrommyhouse · 18/06/2023 20:02

No neighbours. No chance of any houses being built. The view.

Hoffi · 18/06/2023 20:04

We're right in the middle of farming country, so I can get fresh organic milk from one of several milk dispensers, free range eggs from the farm's automated machine, locally reared meat, and fresh fruit and veg, all within a mile or two of the house. also a lot of cider and beer

Also true for me. We will move to the coast eventually I hope. But may have to wait till I retire, and until my daughter goes to university (or whatever she chooses to do). Our ideal would be a bit of land near the sea we could put a caravan on or a static or something, and be semi self-sufficient and my husband could run his business (self employed). My DD would love this lifestyle if she chose to live with us - she has always been in to self-sufficiency herself.

Another downside for me of where we are now is that my husband moved here for me, and doesn't like much about it really. He's got no friends locally and no reason to be here really apart from me. So I feel sad for him and also a bit pressured by this at times, which I admit I do resent (I know that makes me sound horrible!)

Life is all about compromise I guess. And I do believe it's possible to be happy pretty much anywhere.

cassiatwenty · 18/06/2023 20:09

It's very safe.

Clean air. Access to beautiful parks and nature. Excellent transport. I can walk all by my own late at night, 2 or 4 AM, and I just feel safe.

People are polite and kind (small things) yet very reserved and a bit cold.

I can hear birds chirping, dawn. Beautiful sunsets and clouds, I can see the stars. Historical buildings, monuments and museums.

It's def not overcrowded, I can walk anywhere and not feel suffocated by crowds of people.

Nice architecture & cars in my area. People dress and look nice. There's also access to beautiful nature, hills, and such.

Granted it's not buzzing with life, or lots of opportunities for young people or where lots of interesting things/nice experiences happen.

WaitingforSummer77 · 18/06/2023 20:12

The location. As a PP said, I also love that I don't need a car or to drive. I live on the edge of the city centre in a big city. I'm 5 minutes walk from the main train station, on numerous bus routes, and everywhere locally is connected by cycle paths so I can get to most places locally on my bike. There are a lot of cultural and social opportunities on my doorstep, and shops, restaurants, bars, sports, gyms etc in easy walking distance.

There are plenty of things that I don't like about where I live right now (noise, smells, crime, lack of greenery)...but its very easy to escape from for the day! It suits me for now.

MaidOfSteel · 18/06/2023 20:18

Our house is on a farm. We have endless views; trees, fields, dry stone walls, beautiful old farmhouses, steadings, animals, the hills. It's gorgeous and so peaceful.

Wearegoingtoneedabiggerboat · 18/06/2023 20:25

The beach is at the bottom of the street. Loads of independent shops and coffee shops with It’s own little cinema. Good transport links into town. Excellent schools. So quiet and peaceful.
The house on the other hand is in serious need of an overhaul, loads of work needs doing which takes the shine off a bit.

whiteroseredrose · 18/06/2023 20:25

We're here because the area is 'nice' and close to my DM. We are 15 mins from 3 NT properties and 30 min on a tram into Manchester.

The education here is very good. We have a number of Grammar Schools and the High Schools are also good.

Thighdentitycrisis · 18/06/2023 20:26

I have a very desirable flat in a popular part of London and I have a secure tenancy for life, but I’m not happy here and I wish I could move

iamnottoofatiamjusttooshort · 18/06/2023 20:27

I love that my horse is 5 minutes walk away

That there are no buses or trains

That I finally got the sofa I wanted

And I love that I've done all the ironing tonight

Bluevelvetsofa · 18/06/2023 20:52

I like my house and I like my neighbours.
I like that the beach is nearby.
I like that there are food shops within walking distance, or a short drive away.
I like that there’s public transport a five minute walk away and links to bigger towns and London.

I loathe the nearest town, which is bereft of any decent shops and unpleasant. Fortunately we don’t need to go there for anything.

EpicAdventure · 18/06/2023 23:20

That despite living in a suburb of the second city of England, I feel part of a community. I think that's down to the schools and the friends I have made from those. Everyone with children seems to be connected in some way in this suburb (didn't grow up here)!

Also big park 15 minutes from us, train station into the city 5 minutes away and local shops 10. Half hour to countryside.

But not by the coast. That's the downside.

DarkDarkNight · 18/06/2023 23:25

I feel safe from crime. There is very little violent crime and I never really worry about having my phone out. We’re on the edge of a National Park and it’s nice to be able to be so close to fells, lakes, the sea.

Lndnmummy · 18/06/2023 23:28

I love the diversity and the fact my children have access to the best sports and cultural activities. Today we got up and drove for 10min to get to Southbank for lunch, then had a wonder around some shops. I love that I have made friends who I see as family. We are clothes, our children are close.

Its London. Its too crowded. It is expensive. Its hot. Its dirty. But its home

echt · 18/06/2023 23:31

Close to the sea.
At night you can hear a pin drop.
Fabulous starry skies and moonlight due to sensible minimal street lighting in Melbourne suburb, though the first time I drove at night there I was very nervous, as all Poms are first time out.

NeverendingCircus · 18/06/2023 23:33

Nature on the doorstep - hills, woods, heathland all within minutes of my front door. I love the birdsong, wild animals (deer, foxes, badgers, butterflies and dragonflies, newts) and the farm animals in the fields, picking blackberries and wild chestnuts, the sweet smell of the air. And yet I can be in central London in 35 mins on the train and the nearest towns are 10 mins drive away.
