How flexible is flexible

Took on a job and was asked about flexibility, I was honest I have primary children, but family help with childcare and that I would do my best.
Nothing about how many days were expected to cover just told no holidays allowed at certain times of year which I have abided by.
My contract is hours not days although we have our normal days every week in general we must assume these are our set days.

I feel I have bent over backwards changing shifts and days for others or popping in for an hour or more to cover appointments even though it cost me more than I earned on those part days in petrol and parking.

I have asked for a few switches myself but most have been told no.

There's alot more I could prattle on about but I don't know how much is relivent.

So my question is if you worked part time how many times a year would you think you had to cover or switch shifts to be considered flexible.
