Help me feed 20 at a nice BBQ

Having a get together, a celebration for 20 adults and children. Want to do something nice and looks well put together, but with minimal effort beforehand! Cost isn’t a factor and I don’t just want to do burgers/sausages in rolls. Any ideas/suggestions/ready made stuff/salads I can pick up before hand? Too late to get catered stuff. What have you found goes down well/makes it extra special?

Any veggies/allergies/other dietary requirements?

Minimal effort beforehand usually means a bit more effort on the day..

Homemade buns
Skewers with peppers/onion and salmon and/or halloumi
Chicken breast - for chicken burgers
Halloumi
Feta mint cucumber salad
Jamie Oliver potato salad
Crisps and dips
Crudite and dips

I was in Morrisons yesterday and saw someone filling up large containers from the salad bar with one item. Am I explaining it properly? One full of the noodle salad, one full of the naked burrito, etc etc. I think it was for a BBQ! Would that help?

Our normal go to is. Burgers and sausages (sorry). Chicken skewers, halloumi skewers for the vegetarians (veggies burgers and sausages too).

home made pasta salad, home made crustless quiche, home made potato salad, home made coleslaw and a green salad. Plus nibbles and a load of booze. 😎

not very fancy, but good, looks like you e made an effort and not too time consuming. Cost is a bit of a factor for us and it keeps it reasonable.

How much time do you have? I buy a mahoosive tomahawk steak from Costco for £50. I also buy loins of pork and marinate in ginger, garlic, honey and five spice. They are always loved.

Go to a supermarket with a butchery counter and get the butcher to butterfly a couple of lamb legs for you. Look up Nigella's recipe.

Then you can cook them slowly on the barbecue and serve with bought flatbreads, mixed salad, tzatziki, sliced marinated tomatoes. Barbecued baby potatoes (par boiled first) with garlic and lemon oil make a lovely accompaniment too: thread them onto skewers after marinating so they can crisp up like mini roast potatoes.

For dessert throw foil wrapped bananas onto the barbecue, ice cream and cheesecakes.

This butterfly leg of lamb slow cooked on the bbq is beyond gorgeous

Agree, we have done it several times now, and it is really low on advance prep just as the OP requested. Even the accompaniments are largely 'buy and pour it into a bowl', except the potatoes which aren't complicated at all.

Food sounds delicious and covered

To just add make up a few jugs of Pimms. And for a non boozey option a non alcoholic punch like this www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/citrus-peach-cooler

WhyCantPeopleBeNice · 17/06/2023 16:40

We often do a deboned lamb shoulder slow cooked in the smoker, flat breads, couscous.
Then you can add in some stuffed peppers, roasted new potatoes and a salami type meat spread
I've also started getting a sirloin joint, BBQ that and then cut into slices - can get it lovely and seared on the outside whilst still pink inside.

Oh this sounds amazing. I'm saving this idea! Thank you!

Finely chopped sweet gherkins (optional)
Finely chopped spring onions
Black pepper
Mayonnaise, squirt of sweet yellow mustard to taste
Garnish with halved bodied eggs and a dash of paprika

Steak, steak, steak and more steak
Use a dry rub on them the night before. Grill on bbq, use a bbq sauce or mop sauce towards end of cooking - wrap in foil to rest

Whole spatchcock chicken - marinate the night before or use dry rub or if brave enough brine - cook over indirect heat on the bbq slow and low and then reverse sear or slow smoke over night

ginslinger · 17/06/2023 17:14

coming on to repeat the advice about the butterflied lamb - it works brilliantly.

cocksstrideintheevening · 17/06/2023 17:32

I hate sausage and burger bbqs.
Tend to do things like:

Butterflied shoulder of lamb

Chicken doner

Porchetta

Pulled pork

Beer can chickens

Char Sui pork

Smoked brisket
