Chip Butty/Sandwich/Roll….

BathshebaKnickerStickers · 16/06/2023 20:31

I can’t even begin to describe how my husband and I have just had a conversation in which we discovered that neither of us has ever put chips in a sandwich/roll/butty….

I always thought I was a little unusual in this but he thought that was perfectly normal. I’m from Central Scotland and he is from NE Scotland.

Are we unusual to have never done the chips/bread product thing..?

I had one once years ago. Never bothered again.

Yes I am Scottish, I also have a sense of humour.

As do I. In fact I'm bloody hilarious, but I hate that base, stereotypical shite. It does us no favours at all.

God, you’ve just missed out on SO MUCH

I’m so sorry

please tell me you’ve at least tried a Crisp Sandwich?

Hah I see someone already beat me to the crisp sandwich above.. god you really really have missed out.

you have a lot to catch up on - I’m jealous

BathshebaKnickerStickers · 16/06/2023 21:47

DH absolutely loves crisps - almost an essential food group - but would ever countenance having them within a bread scenario.

I love chip butties and crisp sandwiches.

I had a hash brown sandwich today which was very nice.

mummyof2boys30 · 16/06/2023 21:52

If from Northern Ireland defo a thing. Crisp sandwiches where our only pincic growing up. I absolutely love a irwins muffin with prawn cocktail crisps now

BathshebaKnickerStickers · 16/06/2023 21:53

Now I was in subway earlier and the lady in front of me ordered hash browns on her sub. Maybe that was subconsciously on my mind when DH and I suddenly had this conversation

Are you sure you are Scottish? What are you doing calling it a chip butty/sandwich/roll - it's a piece and chips or a roll and chips! (And utterly delicious, even if it does give me heartburn these days...)

BathshebaKnickerStickers · 16/06/2023 22:01

@WeegieWan Sorry. I really am Scottish though but Central Perthshire isn’t known for its vernacular

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 16/06/2023 22:05

Chip stottie soaked in gravy is the BEES FUCKING KNEES

BathshebaKnickerStickers · 16/06/2023 22:06

What the bejabbers is a “Scottie”…?

OP posts:
Sierra26 · 16/06/2023 22:09

honestly no idea why anyone would ruin tasty crispy chips by putting them in boring textureless bread!!

but I don’t really enjoy bread

i know I’m in the minority but really can’t understand it

also NE Scotland

BathshebaKnickerStickers · 16/06/2023 22:10

Sorry, a stottie - autocorrect

EwwSprouts · 16/06/2023 22:12

I remember my dad making a chip butty at home one tea time and saying to him 'we're not allowed to do that' and his reply 'you're old enough to make your own decisions now'. Revelation!

Got to be decent butter though so no Lurpak type stuff.

A type of bread from the NE England. It's like a bread bun but heavy and doughy. I believe also called an oven bottom bun?

EwwSprouts · 16/06/2023 22:13

@BathshebaKnickerStickers A Stottie is a large fairly flat bread roll/cake from the NE.

HRTQueen · 16/06/2023 22:13

Obviously you weirdos belong together if that’s any consolation

Ingredients: chip shop or crinkle chips in white buttered bread, lots of salt a little vinegar and ketchup

I love a crispy roll chip butty too

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 16/06/2023 22:14

Greggs sell them. I assume they sold them everywhere!

BathshebaKnickerStickers · 16/06/2023 22:15

Our Greggs definitely don’t

@BeyondMyWits I used to share an office with the daughter of the owners of the cafe on the dock. Small world!

Come visit Newcastle and give it a try.

Also see ham and peas pudding stottie

TokenGinger · 16/06/2023 22:30

A chip muffin dipped into gravy from the chippy is sensational.

i always thought a Stottie was Scottish..

Recently perhaps when a little throwback drunk I had a humous wrap thing they put some chips in.. it was surprising but it was good.

📣What is universally true though is any sniff of gravy, curry sauce or anything resembling either of things is completely wrong and evil near chips. Chips need some crunch to contrast with the fluff FGS.
