Chip Butty/Sandwich/Roll….

BathshebaKnickerStickers · 16/06/2023 20:31

I can’t even begin to describe how my husband and I have just had a conversation in which we discovered that neither of us has ever put chips in a sandwich/roll/butty….

I always thought I was a little unusual in this but he thought that was perfectly normal. I’m from Central Scotland and he is from NE Scotland.

Are we unusual to have never done the chips/bread product thing..?

I never ate them before or after being a student, so not all that odd.

BathshebaKnickerStickers · 16/06/2023 20:55

Who knew this was a regional thing….!

wtf from scotland and never had a chip butty, i call bullshit

Why? Because you buy into that stereotype that we eat unhealthy food? And it would NEVER be called a butty- that's an English thing (along with 'pop" - wtf!🙃).

nocoolnamesleft · 16/06/2023 20:56

Fish and chip butty. Food of the gods.

BeyondMyWits · 16/06/2023 20:56

Chip butty was the staple meal of the day as a student (in Hull)... the cafe on the docks did a chip butty with red sauce and a mug of tea all for under a quid.

Sometimes on a special occasion we'd have a fried egg with runny yolk oozing over the top of the chips.

1983 and I can still remember the taste.

continentallentil · 16/06/2023 20:57

… and even then I preferred chips and cheese…

This does indeed sound delicious. Swap the sauce to brown and 1989 and I'm right with you!

Oh my god you haven’t lived. Please tell me you’ve at least had a crisp sandwich.

bonfirebash · 16/06/2023 21:01

Pasty barm is even better. With brown sauce

BathshebaKnickerStickers · 16/06/2023 21:02

I have checked and neither of us have ever had a crisp sandwich either…!!!!

And a banana sandwich. Yes please.

Amandasummers · 16/06/2023 21:05

It’s not really a thing around me I don’t think, I’ve never had one!

can any other herts/Essex folk confirm?! I always thought it was a northern thing!

Grin really odd to me! I went to school in NW (Lancs) and a 'chip barm' was the standard senior school dinner (along with 10 Benson and Hedges)- we got allowed out back then so flocked to the local chippies. I was very perturbed when I visited Sheffield Uni and it was called a 'chip butty'. I've lived in Yorkshire for 30 odd years now so chip butty rules.

Reminds me of when I was 19 and on a work trip to Manchester (Clayton) in the 1980s, working late putting in some new IT kit, we were hungry and popped out to the local chippy to grab something quickly, it was like trying to converse in a different language!

Me - Can I have a chip butty please?
Mavis - What's a chip butty?
Me - A chip roll?
Mavis - A what?
Me - A roll in chips....?
Mavis - Rita, what is a "roll in chips"?
Rita - 🤷‍♀️
Me- Just a bread roll with some chips inside it?
Rita - She wants a chip barm, Mavis!
Mavis - Why didn't you say that!
Me - Sorry, can I have a chip barm <Scurries out thinking what the fuck is a barm? Confused>

I'm from Liverpool and we always gad chip butties growing up.

I'm from Hertfordshire (now live in London) and always had chip butties and crisp sandwiches growing up 😊

She was maybe weaned on them at 8 weeks but has forgotten 🤣

ThatFraggle · 16/06/2023 21:09

I haven't either

DrCoconut · 16/06/2023 21:11

@WeAllHaveWings I'd never heard of a barm until I went to Manchester uni. A lot of the chippies there seemed to do chip barms and also chip butties which were made with sliced bread. But the true food of the night out gods was a chip naan from Abduls on Oxford Road. Especially with yogurt sauce.

AgnesX · 16/06/2023 21:13

Yes...

Central belt so not unusual although not after a night out. That was pizza or pakora in the taxi rank.

MyEyesAreBleeding · 16/06/2023 21:17

Oh wow. A chip butty 😋. I do line mine up side by side. Long time since I had one.

Have you ever had a crisp sandwich? Not sure if that's quite a Northern Irish thing. I don't think it is.

I weep at the thought of how many years you've missed out on the joy of a chip butty 😥

But she'll have the chance to experience to enjoy it for the first time!

Or a mash cob, with ketchup 😋

I know this is a light-hearted thread, but I hate that cap. Not funny. Even if you're Scottish, that's just solidifying the myth.

Yes I am Scottish, I also have a sense of humour.

bonfirebash · 16/06/2023 21:35

@WeAllHaveWings Grin
We were in catered halls at uni and between barm, roll, tea cake, cob...
the poor staff ended up going "just point at what you want please"
