Bit of a weird question!

So, I have the 10ft bestway pro max swimming pool being delivered tomorrow. Typically for me, it’s rain/thunderstorms for the next 3 days!! Could I build the pool and let the rainwater fill it? Then add chlorine before using it? Surely rainwater is cleaner than tap water, but it just feels odd!

Okay, so here's the science bit. Rainwater brings algae spores down with it, which will start to grow in the water. Lightning does something technical to nitrogen, which will make the algae multiply like crazy and the water will go green quickly - sometimes overnight. In order to keep the water clear, you need chlorine in the water to kill off the algae and any germs in the water, which needs to be at the correct pH level (acidity/alkalinity) in order for the chlorine to work properly. Remember that litmus paper stuff they got us to play with at school? Swimming pool water test strips basically do the same thing, and will tell you the pH, and also the current level of chlorine in the water. You use that and the calculated volume of water in your pool to work out how much chlorine to put in. You will need to test the water daily.
Are you with me so far?

And if you think this is an over-reaction to a bit of green water, algae isn't great for human health, and you can't see the bottom of a cloudy pool. If the water isn't clear, you can't see anyone who has fallen in and sunk to the bottom.

I do have these coming tomorrow (that’s not my postcode at the top I’m not even sure why my phone thinks that’s our location🤣) so maybe the rain water is a no! Drowning kids that I can’t see would really put a downer on summer..🤣

Maybe you should order an extra long hose that’ll travel from your kitchen tap to the pool.

JanesBlond · 16/06/2023 18:16

Omg OP 🤣 Get an outside tap installed! We had one put in last summer and it was super quick and not too expensive (circa £100 iirc) although it was next to the kitchen. Can you run a hose from a bathroom?

How big is your house? 200ft hosepipe in B&Q.

We have one similar and they're really good as they retract pretty small

Thank god! Because it doesn’t fit my tap is way smaller than the provided hole! My life is like a series of unfortunate events🤣

Noooo! Damn yiu DH for being sensible, I had another brilliant idea when you said you live by the sea

Oh well, I'm pleased yiu won't need to do 900 trips with the washing up bowl to fill the pool.

chocspot · 16/06/2023 18:28

Our 12ft pool takes about 10 hours to fill with the hosepipe. Trips back and forth with the washing up bowl will take you about 10 weeks 😆😆

For what it's worth I have a friend who put their pool up really early in the year and let it fill with rain water. I think they managed about half full (over the course of several months!) then topped it up when the weather started to get nicer. They make sure all the chemicals are correct of course.

unsync · 16/06/2023 18:31

You can get kits to put an outside tap in. Just make sure you connect to the right pipe. Unlike my dickhead ex, we ended up with a hot water outside tap. Although, if you wanted a hot tub, I guess it could be useful.

AndSoFinally · 16/06/2023 18:33

Ha! Yes get a tap adapter from Amazon for about a £5

We have that pool, it takes around 8-10 hours to fill with a hosepipe! Leave it running overnight

Jitterybugs · 16/06/2023 18:34

I’m giving this scenario too much thought🤣 I’m wondering what you do if and when you need to empty such a large volume of water from the pool?

All hope is not lost yet.. the thing doesn’t fit my tap! He’s mumbling about just how far it is to drive to B&Q, I’ll have to check later if they’re in stock to be delivered🤞🏻

I saw hosepipe adapters in Lidl yesterday.

justplantedbulbs · 16/06/2023 18:58

We had a similar one. It took 9 hours with the hose pipe running at full force. The water meter was living its best life Grin

Efacsen · 16/06/2023 19:01

Hosepipe ban from 26th in the SE

but think you're probably elsewhere if raining atm

No but I am a 2 minute walk from the sea😏

Don’t fancy a swim in the sea instead?

mananarama · 16/06/2023 19:06

This is excellent. Don’t worry @Route69, your tears of frustration will have it overflowing in no time.

Excellent I'll tell you my "sea" idea, in case you need it.

When I was a kid, I used to love digging a big hole in the sand, on the beach. Then I would burrow a narrow canal from hole to the sea edge.
When the tide came in, the water would run up the narrow canal into the hole.

Anyway, I think this might work for you, if you build a canal from the sea to your pool.

Obviously, there are costs and logistics to bottom.out, but I think my idea has some merit.

Route69 · 17/06/2023 15:04

Right! The thing is up!! I can’t work out the filter and the hosepipe is not connecting to the tap! I’ve got an adapter ordered and 3 of the kids are too impatient and going to and from with bowls currently🤣
