Woke up to find oven door exploded!

cokezero26 · 16/06/2023 09:57

Just woke up this morning to find the glass in the oven door has completely shattered. Pictures attached.
How the hell has this happened?! We’re in a rental so slightly nervous even though I know it’ll get sorted. Making me question if we’ve done something to make this happen!

Sometimes glass can just do this on its own like shower doors and glass tables in the garden.

whoruntheworldgirls · 16/06/2023 10:03

Happened at my friends house years ago, we were just sat in the kitchen chatting and poof, the whole door shattered, very random. Never found out why it happened.

Woofappreciationday · 16/06/2023 10:10

Do you use any abbrasive chemicals to clean it? For example pink stuff paste? That may weaken the glass integrity. Sometimes however it just happens.

ReallyShouldBeDoingSomethingElse · 16/06/2023 10:15

I had this happen to a full length mirror that was on the wall. The sound it made was something to behold and it was terrifying for the brief moment it took me to work out where the noise had come from.

Shiningroses · 16/06/2023 10:15

Does sunlight ever fall on it from the window for long periods?
it’s very common and usually due to minor unnoticeable damage that’s weakened it gradually, excessive heat then rapid cooling or faulty dependent on age

Annoyedandconfused8 · 16/06/2023 10:16

This happened to me a few years back. Oven was not even that old and no damage that we know of. DS woke me up to say something was wrong in the kitchen. Went everywhere so just have exploded with some force. Glad we weren’t in there at the time

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 16/06/2023 10:18

Happened to me a couple of weeks ago. I too am currently renting but because it could have been something I did, I just paid to have it repaired. Cost about £150 (call out fee and glass). Fixer-bloke said it happens - no biggie.

Mygrandadwasmywingman · 16/06/2023 10:20

We had this but with a table
It was fine when I went to work, got home to bits of glass all over the floor
I googled it and read it happens and it's just one of those things

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 16/06/2023 10:22

Our shower screen did that a couple of years ago when DH was on the loo (probably the best place to have been), he said it just went. We were outside talking to ndn & heard the most almighty crack as it happened.

HappiDaze · 16/06/2023 10:24

That's weird

Maybe it's the hot weather ?

Definitely not anything you'd have done

watcherintherye · 16/06/2023 10:25

We’ve had this happen a couple of times over the years with the inner panel of double-glazed windows. It shakes you up at first, imagining someone might have done it from outside, but on inspection, was only the inner panels which imploded. The glazier also told us it just happens sometimes!

Megifer · 16/06/2023 10:27

Also happened to my oven. As a pp said the guy who came out said it happens a lot. I'm one of those people that just can't accept no explanation for things like this but he said genuinely it can just happen with no reason 😩

Bry123 · 16/06/2023 10:40

This also happened to me. Our glass table shattered. The noise was immense and the glass went everywhere!

Zebedee999 · 16/06/2023 10:41

Glass that shatters into small parts like that is "tempered" glass. It is a safety feature so when it breaks you get lots of small parts instead of large jagged shards that will cut you to ribbons. Car windows are tempered for the last 70 years or so for this reason.

Tempered glass is heat treated so it is compressed on the outside but in tension on the inside. A very small chip or knock on the edge can cause this shattering to happen at the time or sometime later. I had a windscreen that had a stone chip... left it a few weeks to then find the whole thing gone one morning.

So your oven glass might have had a tiny knock/chip on the edge OR it's just naturally happened due to repeated heat cycles causing extra stresses in what is already stressed glass.

TheCatterall · 16/06/2023 10:44

@cokezero26 can’t imagine how it happened but easy enough to fix. Hope your day gets better!!

you can tell landlord and/or depending on relationship etc - in the past my son broke mine - I just found the model etc online and googled how to order the glass (yours might need a new door) and I fitted it quite easily with online videos and instructions.

cokezero26 · 16/06/2023 10:53

We don’t use any abrasive cleaning things, and no sunlight on it.
Will we need a whole new oven or just the glass repaired?
Not a great start to the day!

This happened to us , shower screen just blew. It was loud and glass went everywhere.

Blanketpolicy · 16/06/2023 11:31

Tempered glass can just "go". Either due to stress caused by a tiny imperfection that has been there since manufacture or use of unsuitable chemical cleaners.

If you are in a rental and it happened during the night, not as an accident, I would say it is your landlords responsibility to replace the glass or oven.

Google tempered glass exploding to educate yourself how it does happen, and how it is not your "fault", before speaking to the landlord.

Tarkan · 16/06/2023 11:37

This happened to us last year. It had been a brand new oven when we moved in here 4 years ago. We contacted the landlord and sent him photos of it and he just replaced the whole oven.

I wish he could have replaced the glass though, I don't like the new oven as much as the old one and the seal has broken on it already. Sad

RequiresUpdating · 16/06/2023 11:56

It happens. Call your landlord (assuming the oven is his) and they should be able to replace the panel/door.

LittleBear21 · 16/06/2023 14:10

Definitely just one of those things that just happens with tempered glass.

We're in a new build and had one pane of a full length glass patio door go. I was in the house at the time; so I knew there had been no one near it or an impact etc.

Luckily I was able to get the door open before the shattered glass fell. Unluckily we had to replace the whole door (under warranty but still a pain because we had to wait for it to be manufactured first).

timetorefresh · 16/06/2023 14:14

A glass door in my house did this once. I couldn't work out with a strange noise was coming from, until I walked into my lounge in there was glass everywhere. It was a really hot day so I assumed it was caused by the weather.

EarthlyNightshade · 16/06/2023 14:17

Happened to us once, I had just taken the dinner out of the oven, so I assumed that we had heated it one time too many.
I contacted the manufacturer (Candy) and they replaced it free of charge. I was very impressed with that.
