I fear I’ve messed our holiday up and feel sick at the thought

We’re due to go to the US next month (5th). It’s our first ‘big’ holiday. DD1 is 16 and DD2 is 13. A couple of weeks ago I got in touch with our GP as DD1 has been getting stomach ache. She’s sent her to paediatrics for a blood test to check for gluten intolerance (& thyroid) but thinks it’s IBS. The blood test is on Tuesday .

I went to purchase travel insurance today but they wouldn’t cover DD1 because she’s waiting on a blood test. Now I’m worried sick that she’ll be sent another appointment/referred, meaning we won’t get travel insurance so will have to cancel the whole holiday. (I would never go without insurance).

Does anyone have suggestions of what to do? I feel sick at the thought of what I’ve done. It could have waited until we got back—it’s not really bad for her. Just gets stomach ache now and then.

that might not be enough if it has been recommended.......

I don’t understand what you mean by ‘if it has been recommended’?

Your GP notes will say that your daughter has been asked to have a blood test, so there is a test where the result is outstanding. whether or not the blood test has been taken is probably irrelevant.

OpalescentFly · 16/06/2023 15:24

@mycoffeecup - I think op means they've managed to get her daughter an earlier blood test due to a cancellation not they've cancelled the blood test so it's no longer outstanding

mycoffeecup · 16/06/2023 15:25

but hang on - if you haven't bothered to get travel insurance up until now, and you're not going til July 5th, just have blood test on Tuesday, it'll be back within a week, then buy the insurance? or get it done privately more quickly? what's the major issue?

ah, yes I see

I'd take out more than one policy.
If you have no insurance now and something else happens you are proper screwed.
Try the post office for dd. My husband was having serious tests like MRI and nerve tests and they insured us. It did cost more obviously.

Don't do this. If you have more than one policy and need to claim they will both try to push it on to the other.

Stressedmum1966 · 16/06/2023 18:23

You can still get travel insurance just not from the main insurers & it will be expensive (well depends on the assumed condition)

I had cancer, was waiting for my op so technically classed as in a waiting list. So was referred to Allclear. Insurance companies if they won’t insure are supposed to give you a number for some national helpline who can signpost.

it is stressful we were having a family hol to Venice before my op but I was able to sort quickly after being sign posted.

good luck

The day you book a holiday is also the day you book insurance. Declare everything at time of booking and you are covered.

Almost.

If anything changes/is diagnosed between the time you buy the insurance and the holiday, you do have to declare it.

Icedlatteplease · 16/06/2023 18:32

I was also going to recommend post office.

But any insurance make you you actively talk to them direct. Don't just go through a comparison company

Toomuchtrouble4me · 16/06/2023 18:57

OnsenBurner · 15/06/2023 19:49

She’s not got a diagnosis so it’s not a pre existing condition

They do ask if you’re awaiting test results

Toomuchtrouble4me · 16/06/2023 18:58

Ring around - somebody will insure her with a higher premium due to blood tests or an exclusion for certain conditions but still witch accident/trauma cover.

bringitonnow · 16/06/2023 19:00

I was awaiting tests for knee pain when I booked my insurance. They just said I would be covered for everything apart from my bad knee and I am mid 70s.

This is not a good idea / both will claim that the existence of the other renders theirs invalid.

Britinme · 16/06/2023 19:00

It may be that you can get travel insurance by asking if they can exclude dd's IBS from cover? I honestly wouldn't travel to the US without travel insurance covering health - my stepdaughter broke her arm badly and as she had no health insurance ended up with a bill over $30,000

Winter42 · 16/06/2023 19:06

Do you have a bank account that you pay a fee for? On the off chance that you have travel insurance already?.

noimaginationatall · 16/06/2023 19:36

Could you pay to privately have the test done with a quick turn around? Hopefully then you could get insurance

WonderingWanda · 16/06/2023 19:53

Staysure are really good for medical conditions.

I would recommend buying the insurance for the rest of you so that at least you're all covered for now. It's highly likely she will get some results and an outcome soon.

ChrisPPancake · 16/06/2023 20:08

Can you arrange insurance for the rest of you now and add her later/take out a policy just for her? I'm thinking what if there's any cancellations/other issues, at least then you'd only have 3/4 of the costs to cover. Or are you just talking medical insurance, not travel cover?

vinoandbrie · 16/06/2023 20:13

Not read the whole thread, but try stay sure. We use this when we go overseas due to pre-existing conditions, and (importantly), when we’ve made a claim they have paid.

ChrisPPancake · 16/06/2023 20:14

Though actually @theferry why are you blaming yourself for the potential mess up? As soon as your dh got the all clear (hurrah for that btw!) why didn't he do it? Why should it default to your responsibility?
Plus anyway if you're saying you have to let them know about tests/investigations awaiting an outcome, you'd presumably be in a similar situation because you'd have had to let them know even if you already had a policy, or am I wrong?

Highdaysandholidays1 · 16/06/2023 20:17

Get separate insurance for her, I've done it for my dd who had more severe conditions and I thought she wouldn't get it but it was about £30 in the end instead of £12, so whilst not ideal, it was manageable.

BackT · 16/06/2023 20:26

I used staysure when DD had a brain tumour.

It's a bit more but we were literally inbetween diagnosis and surgery and wanted to go away

Speckydots · 16/06/2023 20:32

scratchyfannyofcocklane · 15/06/2023 20:08

Just found my policy and it was 'staysure' that I used.
Don't lie or say its ibs as someone suggested - if you do that you risk them not paying out if you have any sort of emergency - even something totally unrelated like a broken leg which could cost 1000's in the usa

Stay Sure and All Clear are good. Not cheap but good for this sort of thing.

You can't be the only people travelling who are mid tests - not with the dire NHS waiting lists.
Good luck

gogohmm · 16/06/2023 20:37

Try staysure they are better with preexisting conditions
