Podgedodge · 15/06/2023 18:43

So, my DD (just 18) went abroad today, to Greece, took out some cash and promptly lost card.
Card is stopped, but she only has about 100 euros.
how do I get money to her? She has no other cards with her.
I’ve never been in this situation 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

Send to the account of whoever she is with?

Ligglepiggle · 15/06/2023 18:44

Western Union?

scrantonelectriccity · 15/06/2023 18:45

Western Union or PayPal Xoom

MichelleScarn · 15/06/2023 18:45

Phone app?

RoyKentsTieDyeTop · 15/06/2023 18:46

Have you actually spoken to her? Just that this is a common WhatsApp scam.

QuintanaRoo · 15/06/2023 18:46

Which bank is she with? Do they have an assistance for such occurrences? I remember an old advert for I think barclays where this happened and they couriered cash to the person on holiday!

MichelleScarn · 15/06/2023 18:46

Post office seem to do one, or revolut. Maybe the one she lost may do app version.

QuintanaRoo · 15/06/2023 18:47

And if she still has her phone does she not have a banking app? Pay on her phone, google pay, Apple Pay?

Laloca2000 · 15/06/2023 18:47

Western Union. She will need to present ID and a passcode(created when you send the money transfer) or indeed they may send her a code to her mobile ...its been a while since I used it but usually straightforward..

Doggymummar · 15/06/2023 18:49

Her travel insurance should replace it, that would be my first call

BigcatLittlecat · 15/06/2023 18:51

Could you transfer money to a friend she is with? They could take it out and you could send a little extra if there are charges?

pengymum · 15/06/2023 18:53

Make sure you speak to her directly first, in case is a scam.

QuintanaRoo · 15/06/2023 18:57

I just looked on the barclays website and yes they do get cash to someone abroad in an emergency within three days. Maybe all banks do similar.

NannyGythaOgg · 15/06/2023 19:04

So long as she has her phone you can open a Starling, Revolut, Chase card. Add money on here and give her a virtual card she can use on her phone.

MynameisJune · 15/06/2023 19:06

Have you actually spoken to her? On her phone? And not by text from someone else’s number or anything?

ohxmastreeohxmastree · 15/06/2023 19:06

She could set up Apple Pay on her phone using your card?

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 15/06/2023 19:06

As above - have you actually had a voice conversation?

Once it's confirmed, can't you just put money in her friends account? Didn't she have a card on her phone so she can still tap and go.

TokenGinger · 15/06/2023 19:08

Surely she isn't in Greece alone so could transfer money from her account to a friend's to withdraw from there?

Podgedodge · 15/06/2023 19:10

Thank you all, such great advice. Yes, I know this is common scam, my first thought too, but she has FaceTimed me. She has now told me she has her other card on Apple Pay so will use that and swallow cost! Bless her, she won’t do that again! Of course, has just text me to say has found lost, now unusable, card! 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️😅😅

Speak to her first to ascertain that this is actually true and not a scam.

If she has her phone then does she not have Google pay/ Google wallet set up? If so then she can probably use her bank account that way, and if necessary you can transfer money to her.

Is the card definitely unusable? Was it definitely cancelled or was it just frozen and can be unfrozen again. I can do this on my online banking app.

greenacrylicpaint · 15/06/2023 19:18

if she has online banking she should be able to use that to withdraw from a cash machine.

Podgedodge · 15/06/2023 19:19

@Topseyt123 , thanks but I cancelled it myself, as she assured me it was definitely lost she had looked everywhere etc. They will send a new one in a few days, but it will come home, not to her. It was a travel money card, so was not on Apple Pay etc.
All the stress of a holiday for me, with none of the fun!
