Jilly Cooper dog names

Excitingly we've been on the waiting list for a breeder and are off to look at her puppies at the weekend. They're bedlington x whippets and all quite dark grey/brown. We haven't decided if we'll go for a boy or a girl yet.

I've got a secret plan to pick one and start pushing a Jilly Cooper dog name - but feeling a bit uninspired by Gertrude and Badger. I know the hard core of Mumsnet Jilly Cooper fans won't let me down for Jilly-related name suggestions! If you were in Jilly land and naming a small skinny mongrel, what would you go for??

Walter Scott - Rory Balniel's dog in Emily

Basil (the basset hound) belongs to Matt and Cable in Imogen. Imogen's family dog is named Homer

Sevenoaks - Harriet (originally called Spotty, and named after Rory told H the dog needed a name before they arrived home so she opened a road map, closed her eyes and stabbed her finger down)

Monkey - Octavia (purchased from her landlady by Gareth)

IIRC, in Prudence there's a dog called Coleridge.

Decorum was Seb and Dommie's dog in TMWMHJ. I think Billy's dog was Mavis.

Lysander Hawkley. The perfect man.

I'm trying to remember the name of Matt's dog in Imogen. I think he was a basset hound...I may have to re read it!

Jake's dog in Riders was called Wolf.

Why not use one of the characters names? I'm sure there were a few who were described as 'Whippet thin' or 'Shaking like a Whippet'!

There was a dog called Tadpole but I can't remember in which book! (That's menopause for you - never thought I'd forget such vital information.)

I think Tadpole was Harriet. He was the first dog before Sevenoaks. I think they used to fornicate in the garden 🤣

I think you're right Violet. I seem to remember when Cory and Harriet were just about to have their first kiss it was interrupted by Tadpole 'drinking noisily from the lavatory'.

The puppy that Rupert gave to Taggie was Claudius

you could call him Campbell? As Rupert named the horse Macauley after Helen’s surname

Loving all these suggestions and remembering about all the Cooper dogs. Actually Cooper could work too!

Homer would be good as teen DSs love The Simpsons and I could kid myself we were being intellectual!

Love Claudius (doesn't Taggie spell it Klawdius in a thank you note to Rupert) and Blue if we get a blue-ish one. Or any of the character names. Although Lizzie was always my favourite which isn't a very inspired dog name.

I wonder how all the animals will be cast in the new TV show. We aren't a million miles from Bristol and I always hope I might stumble across filming somewhere!

These are good, I've found my people. I ended up moving to Gloucestershire with my husband who grew up here and Jilly lives in the neighbouring village! I'm too starstruck to go and look for her in the local pub.
