Iceberg lettuce. Love it.
Got a bad rep for being boring. I know it’s less nutritious than other lettuces but it’s so crisp and refreshing!

What’s your underrated food?

Beans on toast. Quick, nutritious, delicious.

MaryJean87 · 14/06/2023 10:54

Gherkins

BellyBeGone · 14/06/2023 10:56

Oh yes, love them both!

Eggs! What a great food… boiled, fried, poached, scrambled, omelettes!

So hungry.

Toast

Worcestershire sauce

Toast, specifically white toast dripping with butter.

I genuinely believe that all things considered - cost, effort, availability, taste, ease, universal appeal - that white buttered toast is the best food stuff in the whole world.

With a poached egg on top. Lush.

Corned beef.

@BellyBeGone Agreed. I got so sick of chucking out half used bags of salad leaves that had gone slimy before the use by date I am now only buying iceberg. It last for much longer, tastes great (yes not much colour admittedly), and is much cheaper.

Gherkins

You beat me to it I have eaten could eat a whole jar at once.

QforCucumber · 14/06/2023 11:44

Grandma learned trick - if you wrap your Iceberg lettuce in foil it doesn't go brown!

CurlewKate · 14/06/2023 11:44

Cauliflower. There are so many lovely things to do with a cauliflower....

OldTinHat · 14/06/2023 11:45

Brains faggots.

Yup. I always bought mixed salad leaves in the interest of health. But realised I was just forcing it down. Iceberg lettuce is just delicious.

Tonight I’m making iceberg lettuces wedges with garlic & herb dressing. Maybe with some crispy bacon bits on top 🤤

Perhaps I’ll thrown in some cucumber & red onion. And some cherry tomatoes. And sweet red peppers. Maybe some grated carrot.

Baby potatoes don’t get the respect they deserve either.

Celery, nice crunch when chopped and satisfying crunch when eaten. High in fibre and negative in cals, good for dipping or balancing cheese on. I eat it every day.

TheRainMustFall · 14/06/2023 11:55

Okra

Slices of water chestnut in a stirfry

Non-Neapolitan pizza. I’m a real pizza lover and appreciate a good authentic Neapolitan pizza, but I don’t need dozens of places all doing the same wood-fired pizzas with san marzano tomatoes and friarelli. There’s room for other types too.

BellyBeGone · 14/06/2023 11:57

Ooh yes, love the crunch of a water chestnut in a stir fry.

Never tried okra!

Pumpkin. You've not lived till you've had it roasted. Or steamed then fried in butter. Yum!

TheMurderousGoose · 14/06/2023 12:08

Chives.

No one talks about chives.

I love that sweet oniony/garlicy flavour.

xogossipgirlxo · 14/06/2023 12:13

Broad beans, but big ones that you can buy in Polish shops. Love them. Taste of summer. Especially when you melt a bit of butter on them.

chilaquiles · 14/06/2023 12:16

Pimento cheese! A 70s sandwich filler made from cheap store cupboard or very long life fridge ingredients: soft cheese (usually has a best before or expiry date years in the future) and or mayo, jar of pimento peppers, cheddar cheese, onion powder, smoked paprika, black pepper. Blend it all together with a hand held mixer, you can make sandwiches and freeze them. Reheat them in a panini grill from frozen or defrost and have cold.

The mixture keeps in the fridge for a while and you can stir it into hot pasta or use as a dip with veggies or spread it on crackers.

Absolutely agree! This is my ultimate comfort food (1 piece with strawberry jam and the other with marmite and butter obviously!
Feeling poorly?...Toast
Just given birth? ....Toast
Can't sleep?...Toast etc etc.
Funnily enough have just had some for lunch.
And as you say....it must be white bread used.
