Anyone been to Morocco for Christmas?

Yes I know its June! What can I say, I'm a planner 😊

DP and I are not Christmas fans to put it mildly, and we are considering going away this year. I had considered the Canaries but from what I hear Christmas is a big deal there. Going somewhere where Christmas isn't really a thing is very appealing

Anyone got experience to share? It's just me and DP. We love walking, good food (nothing fancy), visiting mosques and museums, less keen on shopping / souk / market. Thanks!

I went to Morocco for New Year and you won't escape from Christmas altogether as Jesus is a prophet in Islam so it is still a thing in a low key way. Onviously much less fuss and consumerism than here though. I went with Explore and camped in the desert for 2 days and had 2 days in a hotel in Ouazazazate (I think). I have also spent Christmas and New Year in Libya and even there there were some decorations up. On Christmas day we had camel and couscous in a unesco heritage site for lunch and kebabs cooked in the desert in the evening. Some locals actually crossed the road to wish us Merry Christmas. Unfortunately the situation there now means that trip can no longer happen. We travelled via Tunisia and stayed first and last nights at a big hotel where they were putting on Christmas activities so I would probably avoid places like that if you want to escape.

One thing - it's quite warm in the day but cold at night in Morocco at that time of year. In Libya it was cold all day and the locals were surprised that we were surprised.

If you plan your own trip e.g. Airbnb, you'll be able to avoid Christmas almost entirely. I'm often there at that time of year, the only sign I saw was a small Christmas tree in the airport.

Yes, to Marrakesh and it was fab. No sign of Xmas anywhere, so you can just get on and enjoy a normal holiday. Warm and sunny during the day, altho evenings a bit cool. Also enjoyed a day trip to the foothills of the Atlas mountains. Go for it - I would highly recommend.

Yes, I've spent three consecutive Christmases in Morocco, where we went to Marrakech and Essaouira. We had a really wonderful time, hope you will too.

Thanks so much everyone. Sounds really lovely, need to have a chat with DP and see if we're on the same page!
