5 year old (lack of) sleep

My 5 year old has always been a good sleeper, and has been sleeping 8pm to 7am for months.

He would be like clockwork, getting sleepy at bath time then asleep within seconds of finishing reading stories.

All of a sudden he won't sleep until about 9.30. He just doesn't seem sleepy at all, he's wired, chatting... but then also wakes at 5am in the morning.

I am so confused! I googled to check of maybe 5 year old started to need less sleep, but no, it says they need 11 hours.

Any ideas?

Id say you need a black out blind and an eye mask (you can get ones that Velcro so they won't strangle the child at night). Or weird growth spurt? Annoying birds outside the window?

SleepIssues1 · 13/06/2023 06:48

Thank you I think I'll get the gro blind back down from the loft. He was fine all through spring with the light but it is just in the last week or so.

The weird thing is that he doesn't seem particularly tired in the day despite only getting about 8 hours.

Fingers crossed it's just the heat and/or a growth spurt, and yes the birds have been particularly loud lately!

I'm shattered with lack of me time in the evening too. Hate the feeling of it being 8am and you feel like you've already been up for a whole day, I thought we were out of that phase!

@SleepIssues1 we been having same . He sleeps at 8pm (moved from 730) but three times a week is up at 530. I’ve partially blacked out the room but going whole hog today!!!!! My baby wakes up at 7am so I find it even more frustrating !! He says he needs the wee but he didn’t need it over winter. It’s been going on for 2-3 months here

We have the same issue at the moment with 4yo DD and chatting to friends at school pick up they've said similar about their DCs.

We have blacked out the room, got an eye mask, made a point of making downtime nice and calm. No such luck!

We’re having the same with 4yo DD! Kept her windows closed and blackouts down in the day yesterday then windows open at night, and added blackout lining to the curtains in addition to the blackout blind she has. Room 21 degrees so not bad. She ended up in bed with us in the middle of the night; our room is south-facing and despite best efforts is 28! She was up after 6am though so better than the 5.30 we’ve been having, though not a patch on her 7.30 winter wakes.

SleepIssues1 · 13/06/2023 07:15

Glad it's not just us but sorry you're all having the same.

@Smartmove , same here, baby wakes at 7.30 so it's so frustrating!

DS also needs a wee, I guess he's drinking more in this weather so maybe that's why. But it doesn't explain him being so awake until 9.30pm.

He's not even needy, when I tell him it's not time to wake yet he actually has been going back to his room and looking at books for an hour before getting bored. He was never able to entertain himself that long before, so at least that's something.

But I never manage to get back to sleep, and having both the late evening and the early morning is so annoying.

Send help if it's going to last the whole summer...

@SleepIssues1 same he goes back to his room but we can’t get back to sleep
today I ended up coming down for a coffee in peace at 6am!
I’m hoping the black out helps us out!

SleepIssues1 · 13/06/2023 08:54

Let me know how it goes @Smartmove . Occasionally when he goes for a wee it makes the baby stir as well, so I just lie there for an hour annoyed that I'm awake and on edge wondering if the baby is going to start crying out. As if she wakes too early she is then really grumpy!

Definitely not conducive to relaxing and drifting back off to sleep.

Plus, even if DS is happy for an hour that still only gets us to 6am! And he also occasionally pops back in to give me a running commentary of what he's been doing. Cute, but not at that time in the morning!

640 last 2 mornings since black out up! Knew it was the light!

SleepIssues1 · 15/06/2023 23:06

Oh nice, so pleased for you! I'm yet to get the blind down from the loft but we also had 6.40 this morning at last so fingers crossed it continues! Evenings are still a bit hit and miss. Last night was 9.30pm, today 8.30pm.

Ah hopefully ur phase is over and was just one of those things
mine does 8-640 feels like it’s a bit short of sleep but he always has slept a little less overnight
baby for first time decided to wake at 545 though!!!!! I swear they just never want me to sleep till 6 something!

SleepIssues1 · 16/06/2023 07:46

Oh no! I hate it when they gang up on me to make sure I get no sleep!

Both awake at 6am this morning... so only 9h30 of overnight sleep when they used to do 11h+, sigh... I shall get the black out blind up today!
