Anyone part of a “thing”?

I dunno quite what I mean.

Youngest child competes at chess and I love the competitions. The sense of community. It’s just lovely.

I was also at a car event thing with middle child at the weekend and that was cool too.

What sorts of things are like this that I could do? I’m not good enough at sport to compete. I just want to be part of a “thing”.

Join your local Rotary club. Very sociable, and helping out in the community. You don't have to get involved in every project- just do what fits in your life.

I used to be in a brilliant book group - real mix of people it was brilliant.
I miss it. Sadly moved to another area and don't have evening childcare now

Have two. Part of Padel thing and believe me am in no way sporty but is good for all ages, plenty of older less fit people and are very much part of it.
Started playing Bridge a year ago and very much feel part of a group. We have a class once a week ( free! ) and then we get together at least once a week to play. We also do tournaments especially designed for beginners and these are fab.
if you asked me 20 years of I would be doing either of these things I would have laughed ~ not good at card and very very unsporty! Both have had a Hugh positive affect my life and I have met people I never would have.

My friend is only a size 10/12 but she loves her slimming world group for the community and the healthy eating tips

Following for inspiration!

I have a lot of friends whose "thing" is Am Dram but I tried it and it was dreadful - super cliquey, roles cast before auditions even took place and the clique members practically living in each others pockets. I don't want it to be THAT big a "thing"

I'm in a bookclub. That's about it though

See if there's a branch of Good Gym near you - it's not actually a gym! It's a way of keeping fit by doing good - run/walk/cycle in groups to carry out good deeds for communities. And from the people you meet doing that, you may find other things you like

I don't like doing regular (weekly etc) type things where people ideally need me there so mine is cosplay and comic cons. I can go to as many events as I fancy. Sometimes I may do one comic con and a couple of cosplay meet ups in a month. Then nothing for 3/4 months. But I can keep in touch with people online as well. And as most people are quite geeky and weird I find (at least in my groups) that no one judges anyone which I love. Plus I am also geeky and weird.

I sing in a choir and find it immensely sociable. Between rehearsals, performances and social events there are always opportunities to meet up and keep busy.

FrenchFancie · 13/06/2023 16:50

I sing in a choir, have done for years although due to a house move in relatively new to this choir. I love it, i look forward to it every week and the connections I make. Just seeing people and having something to look forward to!

I must have the world's filthiest mind, as I "autofilled" one more letter to the second line of your post!

CrossFit. It's such a brilliant community to be part of. My gym is really welcoming, and there is always stuff going on - charity events, socials - and there's lots of social media activity.
And it's not as hard as you think, there are scaling options for everyone.

TakingTheLowRoad · 13/06/2023 19:36

Wild/outdoor swimming. i live for my time in the water and the fun afterwards with the club. we have organised trips and fun days and it has really made a difference to my life and how fulfilled i am. and i don’t have to share it or arrange with anyone in my family. it’s my time and DH and DS x2 respect that.
