Carbonated drinks makers, any good?

I am seriously thinking of getting one of these as the amount of fizzy water and fizzy drinks this household consumes is quite significant. I am hoping using one of these would be less expensive and also reduce our plastic and tin can use.
if you use one, would you recommend it? I always remember when the family had one in the 80’s the cola flavour was not pleasant.

We have an Aark but that only is suitable for water. Love it, we use it on it's own or mixed with 100% fruit juice. None of us likes tab water or still water so it's the best solution.

Not cheap but DH loves the style. Easy to exchange cartidges, dropping off at a UPS location and the new ones come by post.

Plastic rubbish decreased by so much, it's unbelievable.

reluctantbrit · 12/06/2023 19:03

Sorry, it's Aarke

MillicentTrilbyHiggins · 12/06/2023 19:21

Following because I'd love to know the same. I hate water, but love fizzy water. I'm not sure if its just my in inner 80s child that never had one that thinks their l they're amazing though.

We have the cheapest soda stream as DD loves fizzy water. It is nice to be able to have sparkling water whenever you want - we now have a bottle in the fridge most of the time. We don't use any of the flavourings though.

LittleBT · 12/06/2023 19:33

We have a SodaStream. Just use it for fizzy water as we get through loads and I felt bad about all the plastic bottles. For that it’s great, it came with various flavours non of which we liked. It also occasionally gets used to fizz up day 2 Prosecco if we’ve been drinking Aperol Spritzes - it’s not perfect but does help a bit although I’m sure that’s expressly something you are not supposed to do with it 😬

Love fizzy water, and don't care if it's out of the tap, love my Sodastream

Clymene · 12/06/2023 19:46

I have a soda stream and I love it but I only make fizzy water with it. No idea what the flavours are like

Minnie147 · 12/06/2023 19:48

Got a MySoda Woody, cheaper than Aarke but better looking than a Soda Stream, a good compromise

wildinthecountry · 12/06/2023 19:50

We have one sometimes buy the concentrate on Amazon , they have Pepsi and the like , but we mostly use it for fizzy tap water 'cos the water where I am is lovely .

Qwaszx · 12/06/2023 19:51

I have a sodastream. We don't buy the flavours, but do enjoy the cold fizz with lemon or lime slices.

tigger1001 · 12/06/2023 19:57

We have a soda stream. Occasionally get the syrups for it but mostly just use with with diluting squash.

CampervanKween · 12/06/2023 21:50

We have the cheapest possible soda stream. Great for fizzy water. Feels environmentally friendly not to be going through all those plastic bottles.

Dahliasrule · 13/06/2023 19:17

Thank you for your replies. I think I shall be getting one as it seems worth it for fizzy water.

We have the soda stream with the glass bottles. We just use it for fizzy water though. The kids sometimes have it with squash but mostly just water. We were buying fizzy water in bulk so saves room in the recycling!

wildinthecountry · 13/06/2023 19:20

Posh cordials are also very good for the Soda Stream , Sainsbury's do a lovely ginger one .

ShortDaysLongNights · 13/06/2023 19:21

Another vote for the Soda Stream. Tried a few of the flavours, but mainly just stick to carbonated water.

Caspianberg · 13/06/2023 19:24

We also have an Aarke, had around 4 years now and use daily. It just make sparkling water, we just add it to cordial or fresh apple juice or mint and lime etc if we want anything.
We can exchange the co2 cartridges at our supermarket so just swap empty for full

bruffin · 13/06/2023 19:28

Does the Aarke or Soda stream taste ok on hard London water?

We live in a very hard water area (just outside London) and it tastes fine.

BlowDryRat · 13/06/2023 20:00

We have a basic SodaStream. It's the best Christmas present DH has ever bought me - gets used every day and I take a bottle to work too. I just drink fizzy water so can't comment on the syrups.

SE London/Kent here - no problem with the water. Saying that, I only drink it pure when it's cold, so either in the fridge or I add ice cubes

But that was the same when I bought bottled water.

Which supermarket do you use? We send it via UPS and it's a bit of a fuss to pack and send.

MyMachineAndMe · 13/06/2023 21:48

It's not actually that difficult to make your own - there are recipes for them but you make a syrup, flavoured with lemons and limes or other fruits, which lasts for ages and ages and you just add a few tbsps to sparkling water.

Caspianberg · 14/06/2023 02:39

@reluctantbrit - in not in uk. But I think every pretty much every supermarket does here, and places like curry’s equivalent. I assumed Uk must do similar?

when I just random type London or reading as area example it seems to come up with Sainsburys as option to exchange, plus Argos, Ryman and other places

@reluctantbrit - Asda and curry’s also seem an option
