Anyone looking at FlightRadar?

There's an A380 supposed to be Heathrow to Dubai (UAE30) currently just north of Wakefield.

Thoughts?

I’ve just watched my son’s delayed flight from Manchester on FR.

Im off to a couple of air shows over the summer - can’t wait!

Where do I find out more about Fraggle Rock?

I'm near a Chinook training flight path - always look out the window when I hear them coming! A couple of years ago there were 3 in succession, incredibly loud, and when I popped my head out they were so low they looked like they were about to land in the fields behind my house!

I was tracking a Helimed one day, and it did exactly that - it landed in the playing field about 100 yards from our house. My God, was it loud. Scared the shit out of our cats.

SecretKeeper1 · 12/06/2023 22:57

@notimagain I go through phases of watching FR24, didn’t know that about runway direction though. There is a phone app my cousin uses (he lives near Heathrow - which currently looks like a pile up!), you just point your phone at the sky and it tells you what it is and where it’s going!

Sometimes I just leave FR open when I’m working and watch the wee Loganair Islander pootling back and forth all day long between Kirkwall and various islands in Orkney (and wish I was there)

hedwigismyowl · 12/06/2023 22:25

Omg I've just gone onto FR and I'm addicted. I don't live under a flight path, but this is addictive. I've had to stay up to watch a plane safely land. Currently watching 2 planes flying towards each other at different heights.

Do they normally land/ take off in the same direction on the runway or does it depend on wind direction? Ie if the runway is north- south, do they always take off north-south or do they sometimes take off south/ north?

They try to land and to take off into the wind, I think. So if the wind is blowing from the north, they will take off or land with the aircraft facing north.

I've found my tribe! I love a bit of Flight Radar.

My DH can tell what sort of plane it is by the sound of the engine, but I tell him where its come from and where it's going. We're riveting company.

We had a spitfire circling over head several times today. It wasn't being consistently tracked on FR so I couldn't tell where it had come from, but it was privately owned which was (mildly) interesting.

A couple of PPs asked where to find the interesting flights on FR. On the main screen, you'll see a search box at the top. Drag down from the top of the screen and it shows a list of the most tracked flights.

dodobookends · 12/06/2023 23:16

@JoanThursday We saw that same privately-owned spitfire a couple of days ago - I recognise the sound of their Merlin engine - it is unmistakable. The only other thing I can reliably identify is a chinook.

Now I'm.wondering if there's a Marine Traffic (the shipping version of flight radar) tribe on MN!

Butchyrestingface · 12/06/2023 23:39

I have to admit my only thought is- how have you caught this? Do you regularly watch planes on flight radar for quirky looking flight routes,

My father does. But he's retired. And insane.

Oh yes! Love watching Marine Traffic when I'm near the coast (usually Aberdeenshire or west Highlands) and like to identify the ships.

Also addicted to it when on the Northlink to Shetland but the wifi on the boat is so slow to load due to the poor wifi at sea. Amazing how busy the water is!

KenAdams · 12/06/2023 23:52

There's quite a few of us FR fans on here. Think we need a long running thread to post interesting planes to watch!

Fillybuster · 13/06/2023 00:00

I know sod all about planes, flight paths and airports (although have learned quite a bit from this thread!) but have loved reading all of this. Thank you OP! MN at its finest: no snark, pedants or sniffiness, lots of knowledge sharing, appreciation and a light spattering of spoddery of the highest order. I love you all 💗

HoppingPavlova · 13/06/2023 00:02

You only see the planes with their transponders turned on

Wasnt there meant to be something now where technically they couldn’t be turned off to avoid a repeat of the missing Malaysian Airlines debacle? Obviously, don’t mean military craft, but commercial.

So we cannot track any secret flights etc

Oh, and sorry for appearing to bugger off half way thru the thread. We had a massive electrical storm so I unplugged the router and TVs.
DH had to read a book Shock

I need to know why you would do this?

feellikeanalien · 13/06/2023 00:19

I've just gone down a massive FR rabbit hole. There are so many planes in the sky but it's really interesting to spot the areas where there doesn't seem to be much traffic. A big empty spot above Afghanistan and also parts of Northern China. A lot of planes seem to fly to Anchorage. There are just so many questions.

I could become seriously addicted to FR so think I should go to bed now!!

ErrolTheDragon · 13/06/2023 00:32

I came across FR early last year when there was a thread on here in stormy weather - lots of go-arounds.
And then Russia invaded Ukraine... a big empty space cleared, commercial flights rerouted, military craft such as tankers flying ovals and drones spiralling up to high altitudes.

cushcosh · 13/06/2023 01:36

Why are some of the planes on FR blue whereas most of them are yellow?

Redglitter · 13/06/2023 02:45

Aircraft located using satellite data are coloured blue on the map, and yellow if located by terrestrial receivers.

According to FR Google

SpikyHatePotato · 12/06/2023 21:34

Does anyone know a flight radar equivalent that tracks military aircraft? We get chinooks and apaches over my workplace at about head height on a fairly regular basis and I'd love to know where they're going to/ from

globe.adsbexchange.com/

This shows more planes. I find it picks up more military stuff as well as police spotters.

No idea how to use filters etc. It's not FR!

Just in case of a power surge.
The lightning was literally non-stop at one point and got damn close.

Sometimes.
When a friend is away on a cruise, we stalk them Grin to see where they are.
Or if there's mention of a vessel in the news - like the one that got wedged in the Suez Canal.

No, due to the procedures for dealing with electrical fires transponders still have to be able to be turned off..

Post MH There have been some changes to some other forms of tracking.
