Help me identify a book!

I read something in the 90s when I was in my early teens and I can't remember much about it but it's really bugging me.

The only details I remember are:

-A book or a couple of/few books in a series (I can't remember)

-Set around the time of the 1st World War.

  • Possibly a brownish cover.
  • About a wealthy family and the surrounding community. The family had cars and the young men possibly raced them.
  • Think one of the heroes was killed or injured in the war.

That's all I remember. Can anyone help at all? I read it in the 90s but was probably published earlier than that so not a 90s book.

NB - not related to Downton Abbey at all, it was written years before that came along.

Sorry about the odd formatting above, my phone has played up.

Was it the Quantock Quartet series by Ruth Elwin Harris?

Each book written from the point of view of a different sister.

@TheMurderousGoose thank you but I don't think it's that. It was more about young men I think. I don't remember any sisters and from what I can see of the series, I don't remember reading it. Thank you though!

Flambards series, KM Peyton?

MagicSpring · 12/06/2023 15:27

Ha, Matilda, it reminded me of Flambards too, but that had horses and aeroplanes. I don't remember much about cars at all.

Jackonary · 12/06/2023 15:32

They did race cars in Flambards. It is also what I was reminded of.

Vile bodies by Evelyn Waugh? It has car racing in and I think it's the right time period

FerrariLaFerrari · 12/06/2023 18:09

It could be the Flambards, the names Will and Mark ring a bell. Plus, my mum is horse mad so it's likely it could have been one of her books that I found and read (as it had horses on the cover).

I'll try and find a copy in the library and see if it is!

Thank you all!

I wouldn’t expect a library to have Flambards - but I often see stray copies in charity shops. You’d be lucky to pick up all four though. They are available on kindle.

Flambards jumped out for me as well - there's a racing car on the cover of Flambards Divided.

FerrariLaFerrari · 12/06/2023 20:19

@Sauvignonblanket I've just had a look at Flambards Divided, I'm pretty sure it's that!

I can't believe you've all been so quick at identifying it, my details were so sketchy. I'm chuffed as it's been popping in and out of head for years.
