Should I go to gp with unexplained bruising (pics)

Excuse the not so nice photos. Been noticing them for a few weeks now. No injury or anything. They just appear. I’ve noticed I’m really tired too lately. I have recently had 6 b12 injections for low iron so I thought it’d be the opposite but since having them I’ve found to be more tired. I also have a few on each arm and 3 on my stomach

if you're low iron why are you not having infusions along with the b12? That would make a massive difference I was anaemic up until my hysterectomy at the 31 and I tell you what it's changed the quality of my life in more ways than just that - Not that I'm recommending that for a solution but I also have coeliac disease undiagnosed. I was always quite fatigued, feeling ill, no appetite etc I still have issue putting/keeping weight on but please never just go on assuming the worst!

Daisythecat15 · 14/06/2023 14:13

Hope all goes well today OP!

FreeClee · 14/06/2023 15:30

Thanks again everyone. I have spoke with the doctor and he wants me to have another blood test in 2 weeks so hopefully that doesn’t mean anything too bad

I have also seen my test results on the app and one thing that stuck out was my B12. The normal range says it should be 145-910 and mine is 1455 but I presume that’s because I’ve had the 6 injections? Last one was the 26th of may

My friends daughter recently came out in bruises like this she was sent straight to hospital after seeing the GP and was diagnosed with lukemia the following day, hopefully it's not in your case but don't be fobbed off if it continues

I also know someone that's happened to but didn't want to scare op!

Walkacrossthesand · 14/06/2023 16:21

What was your platelet count on the app, @FreeClee?

Over40Overdating · 14/06/2023 16:23

@FreeClee that b12 level is normal after the loading dose : this is stored in your liver as your ‘supply’ now.

Glad it doesn’t appear to be anything immediately serious but do keep a diary of things that are new and if things get worse don’t be afraid to call them back.

FreeClee · 14/06/2023 16:35

@Walkacrossthesand I don’t understand the results so I’ll just copy what it says… 249 10*9/L (normal range: 130-400)

Oh now that's getting very much ahead of OP's self.

I'm sure she doesn't want a sensationalist thread. She's just here to calm her nerves and get advice.

Walkacrossthesand · 14/06/2023 17:15

@FreeClee, that's very normal, which is reassuring!

Odd that you're bruising/bleeding so easily though. Make sure they take blood for clotting studies (it needs a special bottle) when you go back in 2 weeks, and go back earlier if it gets worse.

You're not taking aspirin are you? Any family history of bleeding disorders?

ohsuzannah · 14/06/2023 17:51

My dd gets this and she has low platelets.

PassMeTheRedbull · 15/06/2023 01:14

@JeandeServiette sorryBlush! I wasn't intentionally trying to scare OP was just sharing the only experience I've known of this particular thing

My daughter received her urgent appointment and it's tomorrow. Does urgent always mean they think the worse. She's looked at the hospital depart and it's a rosemary cancer centre which it abit worrying and she's worried she will have to have a bone marrow test. Do they always test the bone marrow or could it just be a more looked at blood test.
She's lose another 2lb this week don't think she's eating like she used to (new set of friends shes with now) and she moved out on Friday.

A bone marrow test is done if they suspect leukaemia or another blood disorder.

Over40Overdating · 19/06/2023 08:04

@Sadless Urgent means something which needs addressing asap so whilst it could be worst case scenario it might also be something that can be easily and quickly addressed.

She has likely been referred to a haematology department, which are usually within the oncology departments.

A bone marrow test is a procedure which takes time and usually needs to be booked in advance once a possible diagnosis is clearer, so it’s likely she will have more blood tests first before they move to that stage

If she does need one of those, they aren’t pleasant but neither are they as bad as people make them out to be. The people who do them, do them all the time and know how to make them as painless as possible.

I hope she gets positive news at her appointment.

Sadless · 19/06/2023 20:18

Quick update she saw the Dr she asked loads of questions about bleeding. She has got some new bruises recently but they are never dark they always look green which the Dr said is healing.
She said that her bloods are stable and has took another sample today to see if they are the same now then will decide if she needs further test.
Hopefully it was just Dr's wanting to be on the safe side.

Thanks for the advice

Sal

Any update OP did the bruising stop? Did you find the cause?

Ohthedaffodils · 27/06/2025 14:04

Could be Von Willebrands? There is a blood test that can show this.
