Left handers - finger protection.

DD17 is starting exams and her hand and finger are so battered. Do any lefthanders have any bits that they've bought that help? Thanks.

Genuine question speaking as a left hander - how is this related to being left handed?

Marcipex · 10/06/2023 13:45

I’m left handed but not sure what you mean.

barefootgoddess · 10/06/2023 13:46

Same... slightly baffled

Wyndam · 10/06/2023 13:47

Battered by what?

TheReverendBeeb · 10/06/2023 13:48

Fellow leftie here not quite understanding the problem.

HavfrueDenizKisi · 10/06/2023 14:01

Surely the same things happen to right handed people too when holding a pen and doing loads of writing??

Ilikewinter · 10/06/2023 14:23

Another left hander..... but im not sure theres anything to help. Is it the way she holds the pen?

007DoubleOSeven · 10/06/2023 14:26

Use a rubber of foam grip on the pen.
She's gripping it too hard, btw.

JaninaDuszejko · 10/06/2023 14:27

It's pushing rather than pulling the pen. Does she have her paper at an angle (top left corner higher than top right)? That will help a bit. But I think it's just exams, nobody is used to writing so much anymore.

PinkArt · 10/06/2023 14:40

She needs the glidiest pen possible to make up for the fact pushing a pen is harder on the fingers than pulling one. The uniball type ones work best for me. No fountain pens or those evil handwriting pens.
Other than that though, it's just an intense writing period and her hands might just be a bit buggered until they're over.

This I like zebra ones

I am left handed and get the indents on my finger, but it is nothing to do with being left handed, just gripping the pen. Try different sized pens and good quality so the writing is smooth.

I usually use a cheap papermate flex grip pen, it is much easier on my hands and writes smoothly (blue is smoother than black ink for some reason), if I write with a standard bic or a solid plastic pen I grip harder and my hands get sore.

This^

I don't know. Sorry kind of thought I'd not got any answers. I'll share the thread with her and maybe she can answer. She has a lump where her hand is on the page and where she grips the pen.

I just assumed this was a left handed thing! She writes very neatly and no smudging so she must turn the page.

As a lefty I agree with others that it’s just about writing loads, nothing to do with being left handed. After school, sixth form, an undergraduate and a post graduate degree in the days before regular keyboard use, I had a ‘writing lump’ on my fingers which took decades to go down.

thank you. (i’m the DD)

thank you for the advice. (i’m the DD)

Bluevelvetsofa · 11/06/2023 09:20

Yes, gripping the pen tightly will do that, whether you’re left or right handed. Left handlers often ‘hook’ which I should think, will place the hand at an awkward angle and isn’t necessary, if you angle the paper correctly.

A free flowing pen and an acceptance that lots of writing strains your hand is all you can do.

Ps good luck with your exams!
