Google Family Link. Why does it hate me?

Another morning spent wrestling with Google Family Link.

Anyone else had this problem and fixed it?

Trying to convert DCs Google account from child's account to adult (child is now 17). Will it let me? Will it fuck! Apparently it's easy, I just need to go into Family link, select the account, edit and 'make the necessary changes' THERE IS NO FUCKING OPTION TO CHANGE ANYTHING.

Family Link thinks my child is still under 18. I can't remove them from Family Link without deleting their Gmail account. They want to keep their Gmail account as it's tied in to college/work/photos etc.

WHY can't I change the account to an adult account and why does Family Link think child is still under 13? (yes, birthday is correct on the account).

Has anyone had this issue and sorted it out?

SO FUCKING FRUSTRATED

I have googled for solutions and tried various things as I'm not the only one with this problem it seems. I've tried removing the app but this doesn't work. I have removed parental consents etc but this makes no difference to the account status. I've tried FAQ on Google, but they don't have it as an issue.

What can I do?

Did you confirm them as under 13 when they were over 13 in order to keep the parental controls working to now?

I've heard of this being an issue when that happens - because you've essentially given them two DoBs, but I believe only the original one shows on the account.

From the app on my phone (the supervisor) I go to controls for the right child - > account supervision then it is there at the bottom - stopping supervision. I have used it recently and it worked.

Sorry account settings not account supervision.

I find it a useful but infuriating app. Dd has a new phone, can I get her old phone off of family link? No!

I might have done Confused so does that mean it's not fixable. Real dob shows up, no idea where this other dob might be

I've done that but doesn't really alleviate the problem which is to break free of Family Link

I had that problem some time ago @Coronado2 I had to log in to my Google account from a browser on a desktop but did manage to remove the old phone.

I've had an idea. Have reset the dob so that DC turns 13 on 12th June. Theoretically, an email should be generated that asks whether or not to keep parental supervision which we would answer no to. I should them be able to remove the account from Family View without having to delete their Gmail. They can they amend their dob later as they'll have full access to their account and they won't have to be under 13 as it's not linked to Family view.

If that makes sense?

I'll report back incase anyone does a thread search in the future for a similar problem.

Fingers fucking crossed!

Thanks Timezonedout I'll give that a go.

Forgot to report back. It worked! On the second go. Hadn't left enough time for an email to be generated so reset the false birthday again to happen 4 days from the day I reset it, if that makes sense. So if I did the reset on Monday, the birthday was happening on Thursday.

DC got an email asking if they wanted to take charge of their email, they said yes. I got an email informing me of this. I was then able to delete their account from Family View and they got to keep their Google account.

At some point we'll attempt to reset the age to what it really is but for now I'm just pleased I am free from the Family View matrix Grin

Thrilled it worked; and my random Google knowledge was a bit useful 😁
