I'm not superstitious generally, but.....do your actual dreams ever come true?

Hi,

So I'm talking dreams you have at night, not hopes and dreams, dreams.

Sometimes when I have a dream, it's like I know it's going to happen. Not always the most intense or stays with you, kind of dream, but for some reason I just get this strong sense that it's about to happen.

That's what happened last night. Waiting for the phone call/message or knock at the door. Nothing bad, just to clarify.

Does this ever happen to you?

Nope. Dreams are not premonitions and they don't foreshadow what's going to happen when you're awake.

Only once, about 30 years ago.

I was a teenager, working Saturday mornings in a little shop. In the week, I dreamed that the till had broken.

When I went into work that Saturday, my boss told me that the till had broken, and that she'd been having to add everything up on paper all week. Weird!!

No. It's important to remember that we dream hundreds of dreams-some of them are statistically bound to come true. And those are the ones we remember!

MaryJean87 · 10/06/2023 09:56

Yes quite often. Usually they are symbolic though and will be loosely based on something that went on to happen in real life. I've had a few dreams that happened exactly as they did in the dream. Some dreams are caused by what we worry about in real life and it's the brain's way of processing them.

I knew it would divide the crowd 😂

I will let you know if I do get that call or visit....

Just the one - a few years ago . I dreamed about the lottery and that all the winning numbers would be in the 40's. So I bought a ticket and placed 6 numbers in the 40's range on it. That night, 4 numbers in the 40's were drawn out of the lottery machine!!

I agree with @CurlewKate that it is statistical probability combined with the fact that your dreams are your dreams - proximate to your own life. Dreams are often about emotional processing of stuff that is bothering us during the day.

If you have had a job interview, you are very likely to dream about the job scenario generally and the interview if it is causing you emotional stress.

Imagine if ever time in your life you had a job interview ifyou have a dream that you get the job or a dream that you don't get the job, sometimes it would be right and sometimes it would be wrong as that's probability.

If you dream you get the job and you do get the job, you will remember it forever. If you dream the wrong thing, you'll forget about it over time.

Like @LittleHare s example with the lottery numbers. If she'd not won anything, she'd have forgotten about it most likely.

Dreams can be perculiarly intense though and sometimes you can wake thinking it is real - like someone dead is a live, someone alive is dead, failing an exam that you actually passed - that sort of thing.

I generally don't believe in this stuff but years ago when DS1 was little we were talking about local schools in the area, we had concerns as the one nearest had a really bad traffic bottleneck. That night I had a stress dream that I was taking DS to school and I had twin baby girls both crying in the car and I couldn't get to them. I mostly forgot about the silly dream but we did send DS there and I had twins 3 months before he started. Only difference is I had boy / girl twins. The crying babies in traffic unfortunately proved to be very true

EBearhug · 10/06/2023 18:23

I'm making part of it come true. I went to a breakfast bar and there were puff pastry squares filled with cherries and mascarpone, and now I've just taken such things from the oven.

I am hoping the rest of it, which involves things like crowds at a royal tennis game and submarines, doesn't come true at all...

PuttingDownRoots · 10/06/2023 18:27

I've had real coincidence dreams. Not sure if they would count as premonitions though.

For example I dreamt our bike shed was getting broken into a few days before DHs motorbike number plates were stolen from our driveway.

DaftyLass · 10/06/2023 18:33

Only once, but it wasn't that I think it was prophetic.
I think that it's like if you have, say, thirty possible scenarios of greating someone, and over time you dream about each one, there is a good chance one of them happens in real life, and you may suddenly remember dreaming of it previously.
You weren't predicting it, it's just your brain filling in ideas of snippets of life you've observed or experienced.

Yes - I have them occasionally, they’re more like premonitions than dreams though, they’re different. I dreamt Princess Diana was going to die just before she did (she wasn’t someone I’d dreamt of before then or since or had any interest in). It was a plane crash, rather than the car crash, but that one freaked me out. I know that statistically that the odd dream is likely to come true though.
