Retrain as proofreader?

I thought proofreading might be an excellent way to work from home as an interim profession whilst I get through a divorce.

I found this course and it seems good value.

But then I thought perhaps proofreading will become obsolete very soon with the rise with AI.

What do you reckon?

I don't think it's a good idea, no. I used to be a freelance proofreader and it was hard enough to get work 10-20 years ago, it must be so much worse now with all the programmes people can use.

What sorts of work experience do you have, that could maybe be transitioned to WFH?

There are very few proofreading jobs and they are not well-paid. AI has reduced the number of jobs, although you could argue that it has increased the need for proofreading.

Much writing is now seemingly published without even an editor, never mind a proofreader. It's not an area of work I'd be trying to get into.

I write and when publishers put me in contact with the proof readers they are never in the UK.

Interesting. I've not heard of them... Try looking for courses through the CIEP and PTC if you are interested in heading in this direction. I also wonder what will happen with the changing environment. Good luck 🙂
