Did You Really Just Say That?

Idiot shit people say without think but hurts.

At MIL's for tea, 'D'P loudly pronounces these are the best carrots he's ever had. I cooked this fool carrots at least twice a week. Sure, he probably did find them better than mine but have some tact.

Went to the hairdresser when on maternity leave and she asked what I did - I told her was on ML at the moment and she said how exciting, when are you due...DC was about 4 months old by then 😖

MIL entering the house and exclaiming ooh it's really clean in here for once. I know that makes her sound like a witch but she caught what she'd said the split second after she said it and apologised but still, come on, Lynda!

I've forgiven (but never forgotten...love a good grudge) as they were thoughtless, not malicious.

Anyone else (lighthearted - serious stuff people have done and said that is meant to hurt deserves own thread)?

So many from my MIL but most recent was after looking at DS room she said "his room is so untidy- he doesn't get that messiness from OUR side" I had to tinkly laugh while seething inside as though all the kids bad habits are from my side and all their good parts are from their side - I was thinking in my head " if he is bitchy he gets it from you!"

aintnospringchicken · 08/06/2023 19:59

I was pregnant with DC1 and had my first GP appt. She wanted me to carry an anti D card because my blood group is rhesus negative.I explained that DH was also rhesus negative so surely any DC would also be negative( remembering my school biology). Her reply was"you'd be surprised how many young women we see here that don't know who the father is".I just gave her a WTAF look and assured her I definitely knew my DH was the father.

GarlicGrace · 08/06/2023 20:06

You look good for your age
You must have been good looking when you were younger

Hear both of those regularly. If you don't think old can look good, please don't say anything! I'm running out of politeness; my next response might be "wish I could say the same for you."

My lifetime favourite, though, was "You're a bit pudgy, but very sexy". The idiot said the quiet part out loud. I didn't shag him 😂

Leafy3 · 08/06/2023 20:14

A friend was bemoaning some weight gain and commented that she was shocked when she "realises [she] was fatter than Leafy!"

I'm a size 14. It still smarts.

With friends like that, who needs enemies hey?

WeakAsIAm · 08/06/2023 20:19

Once had a colleague moving close by me with a piece of equipment.

She quipped "sorry I almost got your canckles then". Wow!!!

I don't even think I've got fat ankles though 😭

Blondey2023 · 08/06/2023 20:22

You have such a pretty face, it's a shame you're overweight. Said to me by evil witch step mother.

A work man called at the house and asked if my dad was in. He was. At his house several miles away. Yes there is an age gap but my husband really doesn't look old enough to be mistaken for my dad.

I have had this twice. My DH is only 8 years older than me and doesn’t look older than his age, so I can only assume I look younger than I am 😆

bibbidibobbidiboop · 08/06/2023 20:48

My MIL asked me if I'd had a tarts and vicars days at work once.

PJRules · 08/06/2023 20:49

My best male friend is a treasure :

I didn't think you could get spots at your age

That hair cut looks so much better

When does that go down (pointing at my post pregnancy stomach)

He's still single, shocker.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 08/06/2023 20:56

@bibbidibobbidiboop sorry but Grin

DemonicCaveMaggot · 08/06/2023 20:56

My father told me I had 'stranglers hands' I do have marfinoid fingers, but really.

I wish I'd told him 'it must be hereditary then.

He told my sister she was 'broad in the beam' so I feel I got off lightly tbh.

DemonicCaveMaggot · 08/06/2023 20:57

When waiting for a c-section to deliver my twins I was lying on the table when a nurse came into the room
Nurse: OH MY GOD!!!!!
Other Nurse (hissing): Its twinsssss.

^^

This happened to me. DH said exactly that but about cabbage

NaughtyBoyGeorgeMichaelJacksonBrown · 08/06/2023 21:09

Strangler's hands?! Oh my god! My dad nicknamed me the Michelin Man when I had those toddler rolls and just never stopped 🙄Nothing boosts a teenage girl's self esteem better than being called the Michelin Man by the bloke who is supposed to value her the most. He still finds it hilarious 40 years on.

Oh dear Lord! This is my favourite 😱😂

I was viewing a flat with a builder friend. I was 50, he was early 37. The agent knew I had a son, and said 'oh is this your son'? I said 'well I think you just lost a sale'! My actual son was 9 at the time.

BathshebaKnickerStickers · 08/06/2023 21:37

My MIL - “so Jessie in the village is now running. All she does is running. Around the village but now the constant running. She has lost a lot of weight. Before she started running she was almost as big as you….”

EnoughEnoughnow · 08/06/2023 21:40

I had a double whammy pregnancy one when I was sitting down with tight trousers, and period bloat.

”Are you pregnant?!” Customer asked with excitement
“No”
The attempted recovery attempt “It’s just your….your….eh…FACE looks fatter!”

Gee, thanks for that!

Chocochick · 08/06/2023 21:40

Laughing out loud with most of these. When I was in my early 30s and just married, I was teaching Spanish to adults in my house. One of my students, a retired guy in his 70s, pointed at a photo of me and my husband and declared: “Is that your son?” I hadn’t even had my eldest son yet at this point…I blame it on his age and poor eyesight but still…it bloody stung!

Thesunwillcomeoutverysoon · 08/06/2023 21:44

Told a quite new friend I was shattered as I had been on my feet all day.
She had false legs....

Two things that people should never comment on unless they are 100% certain of the facts is remarking on a pregnancy, and assuming that someone who is your partner/friend/spouse is your mother or father! I've witnessed the later with my DD and her husband. He is 11 years older than her,and when she was in a hospital,a doctor said something about him being her dad! My daughter thought it was funny, but her DH was NOT amused.

Oh God, this just brought back a memory I had clearly blocked out Grin DH was in an a&e bed with pneumonia, it was about 2am and my step dad had taken me up to see him as I didn't drive and an ambulance had taken DH earlier. A consultant came to talk to us, and referred to me and my step dad as DHs mum and dad! I was mortified, especially since both me and DH were about 23, and step dad in his 50s!

LadyHester · 08/06/2023 21:50

My mother, on collapse of my first marriage: ‘His parents thought you were so attractive and stylish and intelligent. And of course you WERE all those things seven years ago.’

Deathbywhy · 08/06/2023 21:58

When I was much younger I had a bar job, you could still smoke inside so many moons ago. Anyway one evening one of the regulars was sort of leaning against the end of the bar with a cigarette dangling from the side of his mouth, sort of like Popeye did with his pipe. I told him he looked like Popeye, he asked me to repeat myself and as I went to say it slightly louder the second time I remembered he had a false eye. I am blushing just even typing that now over 20years later

Omg I'm not surprised you were mortified! This reminded me of another incident that happened with my DD and her DH. Her DH's mum was only 16 when she had him,so not a massive age gap between them. My DD,her DH,his DM plus my Dgd went on holiday together. The man who owned the caravan they were staying in thought that my DD's husband and his mum were my DD's parents!

At drinks for clients at a new job. Hadn’t got to know my colleagues, really, let alone the clients so I was feeling a bit awkward anyway.

I was standing with two women, one a partner, the other a client. The partner was talking about her daughter, we made interested noises. The partner asked if I had children. Fair enough question. I said no, I didn’t. She said, quite nastily, “well, I think you’re missing out”. Which, given she barely knew my name, let alone my circumstances, I thought pretty poor.

This happened a decade ago yet, to my shame, whenever I see her, I still seethe and think, “twat”. I wish I could let it go!
