What's this beetle?

I've had a bazillion of these flying into my garden for the past week. There's now some on the clothes I've hung out to dry.
Just wondering what they are as I've never seen them before.
I did Google before anyone says anything but that keeps bringing up cardinal or stag beetles but this is different

What's this beetle?

Maybe a type of chafer (looking in my wildlife book). Can you say how big it is?

COCKCHAFER

or May Bug

But if you dont call it a Cockchafer, there is something wrong with you.

Oh yes definitely looks like a cockchafer, and I shall be calling them by the full name don't worry.
It's about 2cm in size.
I wonder why there's so many, I'm in the North and I've never seen one before.

Its literally called a May bug as thats when they are prevalent. But they are generally nocturnal. If you see one in the day, its probably not a very happy chappy!

Well there's been at least 10 in the garden everyday then they fly off.
I've also found two in my house today as the doors have been open
