Online dating - 'where do you live?'

I matched with a guy yesterday and we've exchanged 4-5 messages since then. I recognized his name and having looked him up we have several friends in common and I'm definitely interested on first impressions.

Today he asked 'Which area of the city do you live in?'. Do you think this is a red flag so soon or just trying to get a general idea and a normal question?

I don't online date but that seems fine to me, they aren't asking for your address.

Astralitzia · 07/06/2023 22:48

What on earth?

Why would asking what area you live in be a red flag? He's not asking for your exact address.

Nagado · 07/06/2023 22:48

Sounds quite normal to me. I’d want to gauge whether I’d have to do a two hour trek for each date or whether it would be more manageable. I mean, I’d be quite vague for safety reasons (near this area would be specific enough) but it wouldn’t panic me.

Why would you think this is a red flag, OP?

Celia24 · 07/06/2023 22:54

Ive just never had someone ask that so fast. Usually it comes up off the back of asking for a date after a week or so of chatting.

The app shows we live 3 miles apart so he'll have a rough idea.

I guess I was just a big suspicious it might be for ease of hook up reasons! Might not be that at all.

It's a perfectly normal question. Confused

Celia24 · 07/06/2023 22:57

Responded to this thread prove I need to get out more 😂

I mean, you've already online stalked him so maybe he should have red flags about you...

Totally normal. It’s something I’d ask. No point dating someone who lives miles away. It’s also useful to know when arranging dates.

Newname2323 · 07/06/2023 23:01

Seems normal to me. If you know your in the same city as someone then you'd like to know how close by surely? I mean, unless he's asked for postcode and door number I would just answer the question

samestyle · 07/06/2023 23:03

I don't over share more than I feel comfortable with, he's a stranger who you haven't met. Just be vague, near the town centre or outskirts, close to that station.

Celia24 · 07/06/2023 23:09

@samestyle yeah he asked what area of the city.

I sort of...don't want to tell him until I know him better? I'd be happier telling him the next area over (10 mins) instead for now which is bigger and more well know. Is that strange 😬

It is a bit strange

pretty sure blokes lying about where they live is a red flag when it comes up on here.

Yes, that's strange

Celia24 · 07/06/2023 23:44

@FloydPepper The area I live in is quite small, so once I say where it is you have a very good idea if where I am. almost like a small village.

Whereas the next area over is massive and more generic.

Just feels a bit early but I don't want to look like I'm fibbing later. Probably overthinking.
