Second hand iphone not charging well

I've bought an iPad gen 9th from a relative. I've plugged it in an hour ago or so and it is charging very, very slowly. The charging bit does not go in very smoothly either... could my relative have damaged the charging port and not told me? Or is there another possible explanation? I've phoned him and he says he's not aware of any damage.

Yes he could have damaged it. Tell him to take it back & give you your money back, he should have offered tbh as you’ve informed him of the issue.

Have you checked there’s nothing stuck in there

have you tried a different cable to charge it...i changed mine and it fitted a lot better...but if battery slow to charge could need new battery...??...does it have a function to show the battery condition...??

Argh, this is going to be so awkward. My charger is not Apple-branded, could that explain why it's not charging fast? It's going so slow.

So could the OP! If he sold it in good faith then it’s not really his problem is it?

My daughter’s iPad was doing exactly this and it turned out part of the charger had broken and was stuck in the iPad jack socket. I was able to remove it gently with tweezers then replaced with a new cable.

I was going to start my own thread on this but I bought a refurbished ipad on amazon and it wouldn't charge properly so I had to send it back I tried multiple different chargers. I bought a brand new one and its exactly the same. Won't charge properly. Its brand new 😑 I don't know but seems odd both having the issue when when I bought a brand new one

You also might try a larger capacity plug. Maybe a 30-35 w. Certainly years ago my phone charger plug would charge my iPad very slowly compared to the big bulkier plug that came with the iPad.

Attached a couple of photos. The small phone charger plug in the first photo was very, slow. Took all night to change an iPad. Larger plug in second photo much, much faster.

Have you looked in the charging hole?

NigellaWannabe1 · 07/06/2023 16:03

I've cleaned the charging port with a toothbrush, as advised by a trusted website, and it's still the same.

It's interesting to hear that one of you found the same issue with brand new iPads. I've done my research now and it turns out that iPads (certainly the newer ones) have a much bigger battery than an iPhone so it will take a lot longer to charge. If, on top of that, you have a non-Apple, bog-standard charger, then things might slow down even more.

Before talking to my relative again, I think I'll buy a fast-charging Apple charger, and see if that makes a difference.

You should be able to check the battery health. Try googling that.

Lonelycrab · 07/06/2023 16:07

My experience of non Apple chargers and leads hasn’t been good. I’d try an official charger before judging if the phone is dodgy.

Don't all these types of products have a shelf life necessitating purchase of the next device? I'm not sure how they can even be used secondhand.
