Are having ankles on display still a trend?

Hey all,

Me and DS14 were having a chat about clothing trends last night, and how oversized items (similar to what we used to wear back in the 90's are fashionable again) as well as bolder colours and stripes.

However, we were unsure about having your ankles out when wearing trainers, and whether it's still a trend (and if it was back in the 90s). DS14 is a big fan (and has just started wearing trainer socks to school aargh as he prefers them, which I think looks a bit daft with the uniform).

Is having your ankles out still trendy, and 'in' fashion?

A couple of young men in my office wear noticeably short trousers with sports socks and trainers. So socks on display but not bare ankles.

I hope not. Worst fashion of recent times, those who followed it I thought were 'sheep'.

Is there something wrong with showing ankles now too? When did that weird rule come in?

AndYou · 09/06/2023 14:56

I am mighty disappointed this isn’t a post about Victorian values and about the legs of pianos being covered for modesty.

ankles for men was a fashion thing a few years back, now sports socks are in, pulled up but not too straight and high!

CindersAgain · 09/06/2023 15:01

Fashionable for 40 year old woman near me.

Women!

It was a thing in the 90's yes. I wore straight leg cropped embroidered denim with matching platform mules all summer, I like my ankles. This time round I also bought some heavier wider leg plain denim to display my funky boots in winter

Hobbitlover · 09/06/2023 15:43

No idea, except I have never put them away , gate them being trapped unless I need to wear boots.

For well over a century now, since you ask.

Yeah, there was this couple sat in the pub when families were trying to eat their dinner last night and they both had their ankles on display. It looked bloody ridiculous.

I often wear trainers with trainer socks/liners on the way to a class or the gym. Not really fashion I suppose, and I didn't think, or care, whether it's 'in or out'.

People wear those dresses- white trainers combo sans socks. So definitely ankles out there.

I thought people that called other people sheep were conspiracy loving Trump supporters 🤷🏻‍♀️

I thought the young kids wore those thick sports socks pulled up really high now? Or is that just with shorts?

greglet · 09/06/2023 16:24

I was born in 1985 and as a teenager, wearing 'ankle bashers' was social suicide. But the fashionable cut of jeans was bootcut, which do look stupid if they're too short.

I'm 86 and we wore bootcut or the widest legged trousers you could find. My sister is a bit older and I have a photo of her in the late 90's wearing skinny legged trousers with a crop top and trainers and bare ankles. I don't think it's completely out although younger people seem to prefer longer wider legged trousers these days I've noticed.

Honestly I'd judge you more for referring to people as "sheep" than people wearing clothes they like.

Is there anything worse than a “sock line” in a tanned leg, though?

Otzi · 21/07/2023 08:30

Dunno. Genocide?

DS used to get this all the time in primary school, they had to wear long socks and he tans easily 😂 in summer when he used to wear shorts and the socks it looked hilarious.
