I want to try a new approach and set my alarm for say, 6-6.15, when I need to be up for the school run around 6.50-7, and use the time for a quiet cup of tea and lost importantly some admin! Has anyone got into this habit? Is it helpful? Any tips?

Yes! I started a few years ago and always wake at 6 (I have a baby who wakes at night ATM so it's all a bit up in the air for now but will go back to it) to have half an hour/45 mins to myself. I'd read and have a coffee or get up and have a stretch or something. It made our mornings so much easier not to be thrown into it all immediately on waking.

I’m excited! Day one tomorrow…

I started this a few weeks back. It is worth it!! Hoping I can make it a new habit and continue it into the darker mornings in the winter.

MissMarplesGoddaughter · 04/06/2023 20:34

I love that early hour to myself in the mornings. It's sacred time. I use it for savouring a quiet cup of coffee, reading yesterday's paper, doing some tidying up. In the summer I go into the garden and just sit and listen to the quietness. Just bliss........

My biggest concerns are getting down the stairs silently past the kids as the stairs are VERY creaky … and getting a cup of tea aa we have a boiling water tap which is very loud.

I get up early to have a cup of tea and do puzzles in peace 😁

BatshitCrazyWoman · 04/06/2023 20:52

I used to do this when my children were young (grown up and left home now). I loved it - reading, drinking tea, making lists , thinking ... whatever I wanted, with no small people around.

BCBird · 04/06/2023 20:54

Live alone.get up about 5 but don't need to get in the shower till 5.45. Great quiet time.

Povertytrapped · 04/06/2023 20:55

I have the same problem with the stairs - but you can put your boiling water in a flask before you go to bed so no need for the tap (or a kettle in my case).

PattyDuckface · 04/06/2023 20:58

What kind of admin are you doing?

On a computer or... ?

thatsn0tmyname · 04/06/2023 20:58

I like to get up early at the weekend and have the house to myself. I can get a lot done after my first coffee.

shamoola · 04/06/2023 21:02

How much admin are you having to do if you need to get up early every day? My life must be very low powered as I cannot think of any admin that I have to do regularly except for placing a shopping order with Sainsbury's.

Superstar22 · 04/06/2023 21:03

I’m excited for you OP and Inspired so I may be up with you (6.30am for me is early enough for a peaceful hour)

Lacoeur · 04/06/2023 21:08

This has just inspired me to set my alarm for 5:30!

PuppyMonkey · 04/06/2023 21:10

What admin are you doing?

InterstellarDrifter · 04/06/2023 21:13

Oh I've been thinking about this for ages!
I want to wake up early to do a 15 min workout and 30 mins work related stuff that'll help me to set up on my own. Things like getting my website set up and reading articles and books on what I'm aiming to do.

Titsywoo · 04/06/2023 21:13

Nope I do that sort of thing in the early evening but I am not a morning person!

SeaToSki · 04/06/2023 21:14

I do this, its just lovely, my time with no one Mum Mum Mummming (and that includes you DH!)

NewPinkJacket · 04/06/2023 21:17

I love getting up an hour before everyone else, especially on sunny mornings.

I don't understand the admin thing though?

reluctantlondoner · 04/06/2023 21:20

I am very confused by all these responses from people with young children! My young children get up at 5am Hmm

PuppyMonkey · 04/06/2023 21:22

Admin so far on the thread seems to be having a cup of tea in the quiet.

… which is no bad thing tbf but I’m not sure it warrants getting up at 5.30am. Grin

Desiree88 · 04/06/2023 21:24

I tried this, but have a light sleeping early rising child who I couldn't sneak past so it didn't work for me. I hope it does for you though, wishing your feet to be light of step and your child to be deep of sleep

BuddhaAtSea · 04/06/2023 21:27

I’ve always done this, since I had DD.
I have a Moleskine diary. I start the day by checking what I need to do that day/week. Make a head start if I can with any online stuff I need to do. Plan stuff. Like the dog groomer/groceries/gym classes bookings etc.
I have a coffee whilst I do this. Then shower, get dressed, walk the dog.
I love it.

HigatusFigatus · 04/06/2023 21:28

I do this whenever I have enough energy to wake earlier than everyone else. I usually have a lovely quiet cup of tea and get bits prepped for dinner.

IcarusFlies · 04/06/2023 21:38

I run a small business on the side of my FT job, and could really do with more hours in the day so this is the main area of focus for me. Also generic bookings - I need to plan a road trip as part of our summer holiday, book holiday camps, etc. None of it is particularly taxing but it’s tricky to find the time.
