To say something to school about use of offensive language

Last week my son (10) was in the school canteen with a friend. This boy has some learning difficulties and my son also needs some additional support due to having ADHD. After the boy left to go outside one of the girls in the year above turned round to my son and said to him: ‘Sure [friend’s name] is a ret*’. This has really bothered me and I’m wondering whether I should say something to the head of year. I don’t really want it to come back to my son as he’s already had some issues with bullying but I just feel something needs to be said about use of offensive language. He didn’t really know what the term meant. Looking for views really on whether I should say something.

That battle is lost in every school in the land. Forget it.

I would email them just to put your mind at rest that they are aware students are using disablist language so they can deal with it however they feel is appropriate, but I wouldn’t expect to hear of any outcome.
