Anyone get anxious about going on holiday?

I love it when I’m there, enjoying the warmth, food and seeing the sites but I get so stressed in the run up to it. Instead of getting excited, I feel uneasy and wish I wasn’t going.
I worry for 3 or 4 days before and all the way to the airport then settle down once checked in. But right up until that point I am on edge and looking forward to being home again? How crazy is that? I am so lucky I am able to go in the first place. WTF is wrong with me?

are you generally quite anxious?

Are you travelling with children?

No I don’t get stressed, I get excited. But I don’t suffer from anxiety generally hence asking

Successstory82 · 04/06/2023 10:53

I missed that you start looking forward to going home as soon as your arrive

That is a bit unusual. Perhaps this type of holiday isn’t for you? What are you doing?

CreationNat1on · 04/06/2023 10:54

Travelling is not fun, getting there and relaxing and enjoying the holiday is fun, but the coordination bit at the start and end is stressful, particularly if you looking after kids and managing them.

Beezknees · 04/06/2023 10:55

I don't like faffing at the airport, going through customs, etc. That bit I find stressful and tedious. But love the actual holiday.

That's not what the OP said.

GreyHairChic · 04/06/2023 10:57

No kids and yes I am generally a bit anxious. I look forward to being home before I get there but always enjoy it when I’m there and usually want to stay longer.

I'm the same. Always been a little bit like that, but more so since Covid where I got used to not going anywhere. It's daft because, like you, I know I'll enjoy it when I'm there!

Successstory82 · 04/06/2023 11:02

Travelling on your own or with a partner?

GreyHairChic · 04/06/2023 11:04

Travelling with DH and meeting another family member there.

I am usually exactly the same. I plan for ages, but the final push to get everything packed, make sure nothing is forgotten, hope that there is no traffic on the way to the airport, hope that the parking arrangements work etc. I quite often say the day before that if I was offered a full refund I would take it and just stay at home.

I don’t even have kids! But I do have an OH who is very passive when it comes to making plans. I love travelling, I think this makes it worse as I know it’ll be amazing
so I don’t want anything to mess it up.

I always have a great time while I’m away, but it’s just something that my brain does to me!

Tidsleytiddy · 04/06/2023 11:06

I’m the same. Booked a long haul holiday yesterday for nine months time and it’s playing on my mind already. Been to the island three times before. It’s a magical place in the Caribbean. I’ll adore being there and everything about it but I think it’s the being away from home out of my comfort zone, the travelling to the airport, the bustle of the airport, have I got everything. Always sad to come home but elated when I get indoors. Wtf? Just mixed emotions with a touch of anxiety I think

Travelling with DH and meeting another family member there.

And are you responsible for all the planning and packing etc?

Nutterjacks · 04/06/2023 11:14

I'm not normally anxious but DP and I are having our first holiday at the end of the month since before Covid.
I would normally be excited and look forward to it but I don't feel ready. It is giving me anxiety.
I was always totally organised and had everything I needed well before the holiday but at this present time, can't seem to get motivated.
I'm sure once we're there I'll relax and enjoy it.

MadamWhiteleigh · 04/06/2023 11:16

I get little flashes of anxiety but I love travelling and holidays. I think it’s just doing something different and my brain momentarily goes ‘hang on…’ but then it passes.

drstranger · 04/06/2023 11:18

I do but I do have anxiety and ocd. It's the packing part I hate and remembering everything, also have young children so that means lots more stuff to take. I also get anxious just before coming home because it's all the packing again !!

MermaidEyes · 04/06/2023 11:18

I get this. In the past we've had transfers not turn up, flights delayed by several hours, had to rush to the gates because going through security took so long....There's always something to worry about lurking at the back of your mind. Once I'm on the plane I feel more relaxed, the only thing to worry about then is the cases not turning up at the other end!

whatwouldAnnaDelveydo · 04/06/2023 11:21

I think it's normal. Unpleasant, but not so rare.

Movinghouseatlast · 04/06/2023 11:23

Yes I get anxious even though going on holiday is my favourite thing. I worry about my cats mainly ( I pay a housesitter to look after them) and that they will miss me! I also worry that my plants will be neglected. I'm just a ball of anxiety dreading the thing I absolutely love.

GreyHairChic · 04/06/2023 11:23

Letsnotargue that’s exactly it. Give me a full refund and I’d happily cancel.
I look forward to the holiday up to a point then I think at the last minute it’s worrying about it being taken away. Yes the traffic on the way to the airport. What if we miss the flight? All that stuff.
Holidays in the uk just involving car travel and I’m perfectly fine.

I don't get anxious but it stresses me out re packing etc and i only have myself to.think about as I live alone. I fantasise about somone organising everything, about me having enough clothes, bras etc that fit so that I can pack werks in advance and also of walking onto.a plane with merely a handbag and not the biggest piece of hand luggage I.am.allowed 🤣

TeaMeBasil · 04/06/2023 11:24

I get this, exactly the same. Definitely got worse as I've got older

Northernsoullover · 04/06/2023 11:25

I'm exactly the same. I get stressed and anxious but I absolutely love going on holiday (once I'm there).

Eyesopenwideawake · 04/06/2023 11:26

What, exactly, are you uneasy about? Try writing it down (not typing it on a screen). Now read it out loud. Is it reasonable and realistic? If it is, what can you do to mitigate the risks? If it isn't unreasonable and unrealistic, screw the piece of paper up and throw it - and the thoughts - in the bin.

Eyesopenwideawake · 04/06/2023 11:27

If it isn't unreasonable and unrealistic

Typo alert! If it IS unreasonable and unrealistic 😊

Nofixedabodewell · 04/06/2023 11:27

I feel exactly like that. I’m getting to the point I wonder if I should give up holidays abroad.
I do all the planning, packing and organising which makes it worse.
I usually enjoy it when I’m there but I get very anxious in the lead up .
