Pharmacy people - Brolene Eyedrops

Does anyone know why Brolene eyedrops are no longer in stock? I’ve asked at several chemists today and no one has them and won’t be getting them in but no reason why.

These were the only thing to keep my blepharitis under control and I currently look like I’ve gone 10 rounds with David Haye 😭

Google is your friend. The shortage is down to another of the knock on effects of the pandemic. But I found places on line that seem to have them in stock.

Over40Overdating · 03/06/2023 19:31

@Quveas well Google tells me every online stock is out too, hence me posting.

I asked for Golden Eye ointment in Boots about 6 months ago, and was very firmly told it was not sold any longer.

From the reaction of the woman at the counter I did wonder if I’d mistakenly asked for the blood of a sacrificed virgin, rather than an ointment for a stye.

I was told to try steaming my eyelids @Over40Overdating. 10 mins over a hot bowl of water, towel over my head and then to wipe with cotton wool. Worth a try until you can find something that works.

@Witchbitch20 that’s a good shout, thank you - I’m very lazy so wanted the easy option.

One pharmacist got very funny when I asked about it so wondered if there’s some pending scandal and I’m about to get some weird brolene related eye disease. It’s been cancelled in Australia it seems!

Yes it’s all a bit odd @Over40Overdating . The woman I spoke to was also very insistent that it was impossible that I’d bough it over the counter for at least 5 years, but I know I’d bought it with the year. No real alternatives offered either.

I hope you find something soon. Sore eyes/eyelids are the absolute pits. Hay fever is driving me nuts more than usual this year and my eyes are the worst.

SwedishDeathClearance · 03/06/2023 20:14

They have been discontinued as no longer allowed to sell them due to current guidelines apparently.

Theunamedcat · 03/06/2023 20:22

I'm having to use chloramphenicol instead of brolene it's actually worked quite well

Zacsmum25 · 03/06/2023 20:25

Using a solution of baby shampoo to cleanse your eyelids daily can be very effective to control blepharitis. You can also buy ready made solutions but expensive for what they are.

wavecat · 03/06/2023 20:30

After months of not being a available I managed to buy in my local chemist in the last few weeks. It's a game changer for me too. Keep looking-have you spoken to the pharmacist? While not on stock they suggested eye drops that had to be kept in the fridge

Over40Overdating · 03/06/2023 20:32

@Witchbitch20 puffy eye solidarity!

The golden eye drops have def been available over the counter as I’m constantly offered those but can’t use them due to a bad reaction.

@SwedishDeathClearance oh no! Any reason given?

Over40Overdating · 03/06/2023 20:34

@Theunamedcat i seem to be allergic to chloramphenicol so that’s out sadly. Brolene is the only thing that works!

@Zacsmum25 That doesn’t seem to do the trick when they get super inflamed sadly. It’s very annoying.

@SwedishDeathClearance oh no! Any reason given?

3 different pharmacists have told me it is due to the regulations to reduce the use of antibiotics.

I bought something similar in the USA which worked and will stock up on my next trip

PerfectYear321 · 03/06/2023 20:36

Weird but I could have sworn Brolene was discontinued years ago

Over40Overdating · 03/06/2023 20:41

@wavecat none of the chemists I tried said they’d be restocking & the boots website says they won’t be getting it back. I’ll keep trying the independents.

@SwedishDeathClearance makes sense but 😭. It’s the only thing that’s worked on my eyes for years now. Back to optichrom, teabags and sunglasses.
