Exercise and periods

Hi, I've always had quite irregular periods and long cycles, think I probably have PCOS although not investigated. Anyway the past 5-6 months I have started exercising regularly and noticed my period has got more regular and with a more normal length of cycle (29-34 days as opposed to 38+). Is this a thing/has it happened to anyone else? Have googled but only finding info on how periods can stop with excessive exercise, but wondering if regular exercise could influence hormones to regulate the cycle?

No idea, guess it could be, or could just be an age thing, I had totally erratic periods until late 20s then suddenly they became much more regular, had kids early 30s followed be a couple of years of erratic periods, then became regular, now peri menopause, and they are all over the place again...oh joy!

Oh that's interesting. I'm early 30s, I figured if my cycle hadn't sorted itself out by mid/late 20s that was that

Have you lost weight/fat? Excess fat plays havoc with hormones and can affect your cycles.

Oh, sorry I should have put this in the OP. I've always been a healthy BMI and haven't changed weight but have exchanged some fat for muscle

Good for you OP- well done on the fitness regime. I have no idea then re exercise and regulation of periods if not from weight loss? Hopefully someone else can advise.

Yes it definitely helps with hormone regulation. For me, and I’ve read it’s common, it also helps with what can be painful heavy periods - if I exercise well when premenstrual they’re less painful and much more manageable.

im sure I’ve read science around it somewhere!
