Don’t normally eat tinned salmon, thought I’d give it a go….there was a full on spine with vertebrae in the tin….is this normal?

Yes. They are normally quite soft and edible, but you don’t have to eat them.

CultureAlienationBoredomandDespair · 03/06/2023 17:23

Yes, it’s always like that. You can either remove it (and the skin if you like) or mash it all up together- ideally with some vinegar and pepper.

Blancmangemouse · 03/06/2023 17:23

Yes it is normal. Pick out the chunky bits and mash up the small bones.

Hahaha! Yes you can just eat it and crunch it up. Its really good for you! Or just take it out. 😀

Randomusernamegenerated · 03/06/2023 17:24

Probably best you avoid the pilchards too 😆

Thebigblueballoon · 03/06/2023 17:24

Unfortunately fairly common, but that’s quite a bit chunk of bone. Was it a cheaper brand? It puts me off tinned salmon also. I try to stick to fresh, or have tinned tuna.

InTheFutilityRoomEatingBiscuits · 03/06/2023 17:25

I remember finding this out as a vegetarian 16 year old making sandwiches in a cafe as one of my first jobs. A giant catering sized tin of spines. And the smell.

I was also mildly traumatised, clearly.

Theredfoxfliesatmidnight · 03/06/2023 17:26

Yes, salmon are fish and fish have bones.

LadyEloise1 · 03/06/2023 17:27

What brand was it ?

QuintanaRoo · 03/06/2023 17:27

Blimey. It was an Aldi tin. I’ve picked all the bones out and tried to eat it but it doesn’t even taste nice. And I like fresh salmon.

Will stick to tuna in future. Fed it to the cats who are delighted.

Totally normal. Is this your first tin?!

Yes, salmon are fish and fish have bones.

Tuna is fish and never seen anything like that in a can of tuna.

You can buy boneless and skinless versions. They cost more though.

Yes, and my last! 😂

I could have coped with the odd little bone but not a spinal column!

Do you know relative sizes of salmon and tuna??

QuintanaRoo · 03/06/2023 17:29

I know tuna are massive. Salmon are about bear paw size.

My dc are dairy free and we have been specifically told to buy tinned salmon because the bones are a fantastic source of calcium.

cantstaymadatyou · 03/06/2023 17:35

I was similarly traumatised by tinned salmon. I went through a stage of trying to cut down our food bills and found a recipe for tinned salmon pasta. Out flopped a big chunk of spine, some skin and very little fish. I just had tinned tomatoes on pasta instead.

SaveMeFromForearms · 03/06/2023 17:36

Tinned salmon is revolting. Even my cat doesn't touch it.

CC4712 · 03/06/2023 17:38

I hate bones in kippers etc, but the ones in tins are cooked and very soft. Also an excellent source of calcium.😀

Buffypaws · 03/06/2023 17:39

Yeah I got traumatised by that as well. I think you can get boneless tins. I just get fresh now.

kizzywizz · 03/06/2023 17:39

My Nan used to eat the bones, she wasn't fussed about the salmon but loved the bones. She lived to 96 so it didn't do her any harm.

Yankeedoodlemandy · 03/06/2023 17:39

My dad eats the bones, the skin then saves the liquid to drink 🤢

Dacadactyl · 03/06/2023 17:40

Lol yes this is normal for tinned salmon from Aldi (can't comment on other brands)

I usually take the worst bits of the bones out and mash the rest into the salmon.
