Don’t normally eat tinned salmon, thought I’d give it a go….there was a full on spine with vertebrae in the tin….is this normal?

Yuk. Tinned salmon is the only thing I don't eat. No actually, cockles and whelks aswell.

My dad eats the bones, the skin then saves the liquid to drink 🤢

Haha! He’s probably as healthy as a hog.

IfYouDontLikeTheAnswerDontAskTheQuestion · 03/06/2023 17:42

It's always like that. You can either mash it all up and eat it (it really won't harm you), or spend ages faffing about to remove the stuff.

I know tuna are massive. Salmon are about bear paw size.

I love that 😂

It’s pretty grim, isn’t it. I’ll eat pretty much anything but there’s something about a spinal column 🤢

IHeartGeneHunt · 03/06/2023 17:43

I love the bones.

AutumnCrow · 03/06/2023 17:46

Think of the collagen

I love the bones.

Me too!

Although we get much of our shopping in Aldi I've never bought their tinned salmon so have no experience of that brand, but you do get bones in the Tesco red salmon which we buy.

It's weird what appeals to some people and not others - I love tinned salmon in sandwiches with vinegar and pepper (as well as fresh salmon steaks), but can't stomach tinned tuna which makes me want to puke just looking at or smelling the stuff. We call it cat sick in our house. No problems with fresh tuna though......

ApricotCrush · 03/06/2023 17:52

I chuck out the skin but eat the bones, they’re lovely and good for you.

IHeartGeneHunt · 03/06/2023 17:56

@LibertyLily ooh yes a tinned salmon sandwich with lots of vinegar! Delightful.

I can remember the first time I saw a whole tuna a few years ago. I was 😯😯😯 I never realised they were so bloody enormous!

NeverDropYourMooncup · 03/06/2023 18:06

I thought this would be about the price.

Anyhow, yes, it's normal - because the fish is sliced through the middle instead of filleted.

Tinned fish with edible bones is very useful as a source of calcium and vitamin D, particularly for women - thanks to the public demand for boneless everything, there are far fewer sources these days, just a few brands of Sardines and Brisling in most shops.

TonTonMacoute · 03/06/2023 18:13

If you have left over mashed potato mix it up with mashed up tinned salmon and fry it. You can make them into little fish cakes or do it in one bit.

Yummy!

People are too squeamish about things like this, we end up wasting far too much good food because of it.

Helenloveslee4eva · 03/06/2023 18:15

Yes. Crunchy bones in tinned salmon- best bits 😁. Full of calcium.

Beginningless · 03/06/2023 18:18

Bleughhhhh

Oldnproud · 03/06/2023 18:19

The bones are the exact reason why I have always hated tinned salmon.

At one stage I had a job where sandwiches would be provided at lunchtime. The only way I could eat the salmon sandwiches was to pack as many crisps as I could into them so that the crunching of the crisps disguised the crunching of the bones.
Actually, I feel slightly nauseous just thinking about it.

BogRollBOGOF · 03/06/2023 18:32

I'm getting flashbacks to childhood Boxing Day tea of soggy, poorly drained tinned salmon sandwiches with cucumber. It is not a tradition I've continued into my young family.
I don't think the DCs would take well to finding random vertibrae in their sandwich anyway.

QuintanaRoo · 03/06/2023 18:36

My granny used to make me salmon sandwiches when I was a kid. No crunchy bones that I was aware of and they tasted nice. This stuff today didn’t even taste nice!

Howtosolveit · 03/06/2023 18:36

Eat it OP. It's really good for you.

Whyohwhyohwhy123 · 03/06/2023 18:40

I bought a can of salmon as the dietitian had recommended it for my dairy free child and my brother sent me a link to the grim reaper Monty python sketch. The salmon is still in the cupboard

Could not agree more! All fish have bones and/or cartilage. So do mammals. If people are squeamish about this, go vegetarian or vegan. I love tinned salmon and just mash it all up together. Spread on thickly buttered bread, plenty of salt and pepper, possibly add a little thinly sliced cucumber, lovely sandwich.

TheFairyCaravan · 03/06/2023 18:44

The bones get fought over in our house, but as I make the sandwiches I usually win. They’re the best bit.

StaunchMomma · 03/06/2023 18:45

Sorry OP but people who need all evidence that the dead thing they are eating was ever alive are a bit eye roll inducing.

My Mum drives me mad with this. Oh no, not SKIN on chicken!! It's SKIN!!! Not BONES in a chicken thigh!! Don't remind her it's an actual moving joint or she couldn't possibly eat it!!

I mean, come ooooon!!

Also, you can buy tinned boneless salmon, if it's that traumatic 😂

Skyrim41 · 03/06/2023 18:47

You just mash it really really well I then mixed it up with some warm pasta mayonaise cubed peppers and salt and pepper made lovely pasta salad. Absolutely delicious!

I do that too with tinned salmon. Always have. Waste not, want not.

Tinned salmon is revolting. Even my cat doesn't touch it.

I think it makes quite a nice fishcakes

When my SD was a toddler she loved to find a fish bone to crunch on - crunchy bones! She would yell, while chomping exaggeratedly.
