I’ve been traumatised by a tin of salmon

Don’t normally eat tinned salmon, thought I’d give it a go….there was a full on spine with vertebrae in the tin….is this normal?

The bones are the best bit! I love a bit of crunch in my salmon 😋

Saisong · 03/06/2023 18:55

I only use it to make fishcakes. I pick out the worst of the spine bones and big chunks of skin because the kids complain. I'm not overly picky though.

Sorry OP but people who need all evidence that the dead thing they are eating was ever alive are a bit eye roll inducing.

My Mum drives me mad with this. Oh no, not SKIN on chicken!! It's SKIN!!! Not BONES in a chicken thigh!! Don't remind her it's an actual moving joint or she couldn't possibly eat it!!

I mean, come ooooon!!

Also, you can buy tinned boneless salmon, if it's that traumatic 😂

I’ve got no problem with skin on a chicken or boned thighs or a whole chicken carcass. I’ve no issue with being reminded that food was once alive. I keep chickens myself and will neck them myself.

But there is just something about a spinal column in a tin of fish which I did think was gross. Honestly had no idea you are supposed to eat salmon bones…..I always thought bones should be picked out of fish.

But admit I don’t think I could cope with the crunch. I admit I do have an issue with food texture but that’s not an animal thing…..I can’t eat mashed potatoes incase there’s a lump

Totally normal! The spine can just be removed easily and then the rest mushed up. I love a salmon rissole!

Have a strong drink before you attempt to make sardines on toast! Gin Gin

I’ve had tins of mackerel and they were fine. Sounds like I need to avoid sardines.

My friend found an entire cows eyelid including lashes in a bag of frozen mince from Netto.

laceydoily · 03/06/2023 19:21

Yes- completely normal. Thank you for the title of this post though- really made me chuckle

The bones get fought over in our house, but as I make the sandwiches I usually win. They’re the best bit.

You sound like something out of Sawney Bean!

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 03/06/2023 19:31

Bones in tinned fish are very soft and you won't even notice you're eating them. Nothing like trying to eat the bones in fresh fish (spoiler alert: that would be a choking hazard). Excellent source of calcium.

2kids2catsnolife · 03/06/2023 19:55

I love fish, sardines etc on toast I would eat every day. But I do find the bones in salmon tins a bit unappetising. And as I've got older I find my gag reflex is much stronger, so anything crunchy in stuff that's supposed to be soft literally sets it off - even a tiny bit of eggshell in an omelette has me reaching into the bin. Which is a long winded way of saying, I get you OP. But those bones have been in salmon tins for ever so don't think it will change!

stbrandonsboat · 03/06/2023 20:47

I like eating the bones 😋

BlackeyedSusan · 03/06/2023 20:50

God I'm so glad I'm vegan.

BathshebaKnickerStickers · 03/06/2023 21:05

When I was growing up, a tinned salmon sandwich was the ultimate treat - that was a SPECIAL OCCASION. I once went to something catered by my mum’s sister and she left everything in the tin in (and doused it all in malt vinegar.).

never had one again - my mum removed the skin and bones from tinned salmon. I now eat a lot of smoked salmon and salmon fillets but NEVER EVER tinned salmon

CurlyhairedAssassin · 03/06/2023 21:07

I love fresh salmon but have never had tinned. I had no idea there were bones like that in it. I wouldn't like that either. I have a lot of tinned mackerel with salad and dressing. No vertebrae in that. The bones are very thin and soft and taste like part of the fish.

Mirabai · 03/06/2023 21:20

I once bought a tin of salmon. Never again.

tailinthejam · 03/06/2023 21:27

Totally normal for tinned salmon, sardines and mackerel. The bones are softened by the canning process and are fine to eat - good source of calcium in your diet apparently.

ALongHardWinter · 03/06/2023 22:06

I don't mind the bones,it's the skin that I can't stomach the thought of eating.
