How can I make it so only friends can message me on facebook?

I joined facebook today because I want to join some local groups. I don't want to receive messages from bots or have anyone sending rude messages. How can I make it so only people on my friends list can message me?

They normally go straight into a 'message requests' folder that you have to go into to look at the messages don't they?
I've been on FB 11 years and not been bothered (had 1, maybe 2 messages from people I don't know) - I'm joined to loads of groups.
Also make your account private in security settings.

You just go to your settings within fb and messenger and go to who can send you messages and who can contact you. Most people who send you a message and arent a friend will go to a message requests folder. You can choose who can send you friends requests also.

thank you I made it so only friends can send me message requests. I understand that message requests aren't the same as messages though, so does that automatically only let friends send me messages too?

If friends can only send you message requests, you won't get the messages. They go into your other folder. If you restrict everything to friends only, everything else goes into your other folder. And you can ignore.

I've been on Facebook for about 15 years, I've never had any unwanted messages, am I doing it wrong 😀

Any friends that appear in your "chats" tab on messenger will be able to send you a message straight to chats, you can then select who can send you a message into requests eg friends of friends/ everyone else.
