Its crazy to see people blaming posters for talking about this and 'enjoying it' when its Schofield who did an interview this morning, making it a relevant news story to comment on. The fact that concern for the way a powerful white man has behaved towards someone who was a child when they met and who engaged in a sexual relationship when the person reached adulthood is being twisted, both by Schofield and his supporters, is so unbelievably disturbing. Especially if you have experience in child safety or have had to endure similar grooming yourself.
This 'lack of evidence' line is tiresome. That's the point of grooming, you know? This is not just the opinions of mumsnetters, this is known behaviour, much studied and considered when experts create safeguarding protocols. Sadly it seems the entertainment industry still has a long way to go and doesn't properly safeguard young people. They needed to look at Shofields connection to the 19 year old he was helping, 19 is still young. As parents we should all know how easily it is to manipulative a 15 year old- this is confirmed by him that they met then, rumours say earlier but this is still completely inappropriate. I would not allow my 15 year old son to have a friendship with a powerful significantly older man. Ever.
Much of the conversation on this has been about ITV's duty of care and covering up, including moving on other presenters who had issues with his behaviour. Its entirely appropriate for the public to question them and is not a witch hunt. ITV is a corporation and we should always look closely at how they behave.
None of this has anything to do with homophobia. In fact, it is his employer's, friends and indeed the publics desire to not appear to be homophobic that has let him get away with what many people watching knew at the time was a cover-up, a huge spectacle was made of coming out in order to deflect attention and protect him. Which it did. That he now weaponises suicide and mental health problems, so quickly as well, is further evidence of his manipulative behaviour. I feel for his wife and the young man I believe he groomed based on the actual evidence we have.
