Leftover, non refrigerated rice

We stupidly forgot to refrigerate the rice we cooked last night and were planning to reheat and eat today, is that too risky?

I'd eat it but you must make it absolutely piping hot

PawsAndReflection · 01/06/2023 19:56

I should say, we're in London where it's been a bit warmer today but the kitchen is fairly cool!

Yes. Bin it. Reheated rice can make you very ill and it goes off very quickly.

Don't eat it. Rice needs to be cooled and put in the fridge quickly. Heating it doesn't kill all of the toxins.

MissPoldark · 01/06/2023 19:59

Not worth the risk with rice!

Mygazpachoistoocold · 01/06/2023 19:59

Bin it. I'm very liberal with best before and some use by dates but I wouldn't risk it with rice left out of the fridge. The spores in rice multiply so quickly.

SirenSays · 01/06/2023 20:00

Rice is one of those few things I wouldn't risk it now. Although I did that plenty of times in my teens and never got ill

hedgehoglurker · 01/06/2023 20:01

I'd say so, yes. Reheating or "nuking", as many will advise, does not kill the the potentially deadly spores that MAY have been produced by bacteria. I certainly would not feed to children or the infirm, nor would I take the risk myself after presumably 24hrs.

butterpuffed · 01/06/2023 20:03

I wouldn't eat rice left out of the fridge or chicken past its sell by date. They are both high risk .

IWonderWhereThatDishDidGo · 01/06/2023 20:06

I wouldn't as I'm terrified of rice left out of the fridge. But like a pp I used to do it all the time before I knew and never got ill 🤔

Also have heard that heat doesn't kill whatever it is in rice which has been left out of the fridge so that wouldn't help

acupofteamakeseverythingbetter · 01/06/2023 20:06

Definitely bin it! My DH ate re-heated rice and I've never heard someone be so violently ill for so many hours - honestly not worth the risk.

alexdgr8 · 01/06/2023 20:06

never take a risk with rice.
i was told this many years ago by an office cleaner, while working late.
not sure why as wasn't eating anything.
i'd never heard of it then.
but have since. much.
she was absolutely right.
last month ate some food inc rice prepared by a friend. only found out later it had been left out 3+ hours.
after i was v ill.
most unusual for me.
don't take a chance with rice.

PawsAndReflection · 01/06/2023 20:16

Thank you everyone! Will make some couscous instead

What you've described is exactly how I poisoned dh once.

mynameisnotthis2 · 01/06/2023 22:25

Don't do it. I reheated rice once and then basically lived in the bathroom for 24 hours.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 01/06/2023 22:30

About 15 years ago a whole team had to retire from the Tour de France as the team dietician had made them rice ball snacks for their jersey pockets which just warmed up in the sun! Don't reheat rice!
