What could this package be? Possible scam?

My mum has been sent 2 DeWalt boxes, supposedly for a drill, but both filled with plain paper. There’s no clear sender info and she didn’t order anything similar.

could this be a scam? I’ve read about scams where un-ordered goods are sent in order to let the sender write a fake review, and scams where expensive goods are sent using your hacked account, and a courier comes to collect them, saying the item was mistakenly delivered, but in this case there is no expensive item, just a paper filled box!

The package had her correct name and address on.

I would get the police involved in this one. The paper could be impregnated with drugs. The DeWalt boxes could be clever packaging to keep the paper dry.

Intriguing.

Does the label look like it is from a business (so printed with barcodes and reference numbers on it) or hand written/plain text?

DP would love it if someone sent him some of those drill cases, even if they were empty. I've just googled and they cost about £15 each.

It came in a black bin bag wrapping, with a printed label but no obvious company name eg Evri, no invoice inside either. Delivered by courier, but just in a grey van apparently, no company logo on the van.

Have you reported to police?

Mysteriousbox · 01/06/2023 23:29

No we haven’t contacted police. I think the paper is just there to fill the box.
She apparently got an Amazon delivery email at the same time, so we think the boxes have been sent in error from the company selling through Amazon that she bought something else from last week.

Those yellow stickers are used by Amazon to sort parcels into delivery rounds, so I would say it’s come from them.

The stuff with the paper is very odd, though - I can’t see any reasonable explanation for it, unless it was supposed to be a parcel of expensive tools ordered by someone else, and the tools have been nicked in the warehouse and replaced with the same weight of paper - as has happened with large numbers of expensive items ordered from them. The fact it’s ended up with your mum sounds like a mistake with their labelling - which does also happen.

A few weeks ago my DD had an Amazon parcel. She uses my account. The courier said he needed a code as it was a high cost item. We had no code because we'd not ordered anything. They tried to deliver it two times, then gave up. We heard nothing else.

LadyEggs · 02/06/2023 09:20

She needs to change her password on Amazon and check her bank account. Also, look at the page on 'brushing' www.amazon.co.uk/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=G33XVXQPUV79Z2ZC

This happened to us. In the space of a few weeks we received 2 x double duvets and 1 x automatic soap dispenser, sent from my SIL in the States. In the first package was a card with an email address telling me we'd won the item with a code to claim back the cost.
We told SIL (although I did tell DH we should hold out for a new TV) and I'm pretty sure she said they had used her account and bank details. It all seemed bizarre to me but they are trying to get you to give 5* feedback, apparently.

Why would you send drugs to someone though?

LICK IT, LICK IT

SageRosemary · 02/06/2023 18:25

@peachgreen @LadyEggs You may want to smoke it instead of licking it. Licking paper is disgusting, I wouldn't recommend it!!

A quick internet search gave me instructions on how to do it, I won't be trying it, but apparently the final sale will involve 1cm square pieces of paper. That's a lot of profit in a ream of A4 paper.

I used to sell dewalt products. The boxes don't always come with power tools in. Lots of people buy the tstak boxes to attach to their current tool boxes for extra storage.
I would say the company has sent them in error. Or maybe a competition win?

Alphabeaters · 02/06/2023 18:31

Although those boxes definitely look like empty drill cases.
